Apples Patent application said the phone check every time a new networks sim is inserted during the "activate this phone" setup bit.

New network sim means one it's not seen before, not if you are swapping two sim cards over that have the same network code, or the new sim has a network code the phone has seen before it should not need to check.

The phone doesn't require activation between sim changes, it only happens after a restore or firmware update.

I regularly sim swap in my iPhone between 4 or 5 sims on different networks, and can assure you it is as simple as sim out and sim in.

I would presume you don't have an iPhone or have never changed sims to not realise the "activate iPhone" doesn't happen on changing the sim?

It's got nothing to do with apple!!!

Apple have to unlock the phone after orange request it, orange are worse than useless I was wondering if there was any way to get apple to unlock it without going through orange.

If I go to the orange shop I know they replace broken iphones with reconditioned ones for £140. If I do this will they lock the refurb or will it be unlocked - seriously tempted as otherwise I have an expensive brick.

    No, unfortunately not.

The replacement will have the same sim lock as the original (and by getting a replacement you will probably screw up the unlock request).

    Not a good idea.

Try a complaint to the Orange Executive office, it's the only avenue of complaint in Orange.

No progress, am contacting executive office today. Is there anyone else to complain to? Is it an issue I can begin a small claims procedure over?

Have had some response from EE through their facebook page, I think they made some mistake in the shop when they recorded IMEI numbers when I purchased the 2 phones. They are querying both IMEI numbers, I ahev repeatedly told them they are the phones I purchased from them, I have all the paperwork etc for them from their shop and they have unlocked one of them.

I hav eno idea whether they will actually unlock the phone but at least through emails/messaging on fb I can keep a record of what they say.

They have messaged me now to say that they will send off the imei and it could take up to 20 days but they have asked for it to be rushed. So here we go again, really hope they do unlock it this time.

If they don't unlock promptly, you need to contact Ofcom who will get things moving. http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/telecoms/
