Orange - is this a data protection breach?

I've just had someone call me saying theyre from Orange (my network provider), they guy asked me to confirm my name (by saying are you miss blah blah?) then started giving me all this info, about my phone, my network plan, how much my contract is for, how much I paid on my last bill etc. He didn't ask me any security questions or anything. I had to stop him blathering on by telling him he didn't actually know who I was and I didnt want to talk to him.

Its made me feel quite uncomfortable, how on earth would he know hes actually talking to me and not someone else? I feel like complaining but would this be classified as a breach of data protection? Anyone know?

I think it would depend on whether it is acually Orange themselves and not a third party company.

If it is Orange themselves, then I believe it is a breach of their Customer Privacy Policy.

So let me get this right Orange phoned you on your phone and you confirmed who you were ....why would he suspect he was talking to someone else ???????

Actually, they do that, strange as it may seem. I had a conversation with them that went

Orange :- Can you confirm who you are.
Me:- Of course..........once you have confirmed who you are
Orange:- How would you like me to do that?
Me:- Tell me the last 4 numbers from the bank account I pay you with and what my last payment was
    Orange:- I can't do that.
    Me:- Why?
    Orange:- Data Protection
Me:- Well, I can't go any further until I am sure that you are who you say you are.
Orange:- Then we won't be able to proceed if you don't give me the information
Me:- OK fine by me. Bye

Surprisingly, I have also had my bank/ credit card company ring me and ask similar questions. Same sort of conversation. Knew they wanted to sell some other service, so wasn't bothered.

If you go off script, the cold callers don't seem to know what to do.

Are you coming to the end of your contract ? If so then, as I had same trouble with 3rd parties phone suppliers making out that they were Orange and wanted to sell new contract.

Never found out who supplied my info to third party as all my contract directly with Orange
