They look yummy. It's a couple of years since I made crumpets - I think I might have to make some over the school holidays as the children will need plenty of things to snack on.

I'm going to order the book this weekend.

I've got bloomers rising in the kitchen. I followed his shaping method, but they still seem to want to go their own way

As a test, you can mix a teaspoon of yeast and a pinch of sugar with 250mls of warm water, if it has a foamy head after 15 minutes, then you can use this in a bread dough mix, just make up the liquid to your usual amount.

Can I just point anyone interested in bread making with minimum fuss to this thread:
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1001965
and the Artisan Bread in Five website here:
    http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/
I have been a home bread maker now for at least 15 years, and this method (which I have been using for about 5 or 6 yrs now) consistently gives me the best results. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to looking at PH of an evening, and his recipes are great, but if you want bread on hand all the time, this is the best way I've found. Any questions, let me know. And congratulations to anyone who has actually moved away from buying/eating the Chorleywood method bread/pap - homemade is worth the effort, and more than twice as nice!

I got the How to Bake book for crimbo and it's FANTASTIC. I'm not bad with desserts, cakes etc but my bread was never quite tight. So far I've made dinner rolls, a cottage loaf and crumpets from How to Bake and they've all been a resounding success! :T
