I have made my own bread for 20 years and hate supermarket bread. It seems that my friends are polarised in their bread preferences. Some really like my home made bread, but it was a big shock recently to discover that several of my friends don't like what I consider to be "proper bread" and only like sliced supermarket "fluff bread" - they even bring their own mass produced loaf with them when they stop over

My mate's wife prefers frozen burgers (cheaper the better) to my home made ones when we have a BBQ - she is in a definite minority though, and always goes hungry at the barbies - no frozen/bought in food.;)

I watched this morning and drooled (!) but tbh I just haven't got the time to faff about with it.
I remember years ago I made a bread without yeast (when we had the power cuts) and it was lovely but I can't remember the recipe.
    xx

Wow- that's amazing! I am so looking forward to this evening, it's the first quiet evening I've had in ages and I have plans involving being tucked up under the duvet with only a glass of wine and Mr Hollywood on the iplayer for company :D

Using cold water just took a lot longer to rise, gone back to my old way of warming the flour first in microwave and using warm water!! Nice bloomer, tastes good but doesn't look as good as Olderbutnotwiser's loaf that really looks fantastic!!
    Slightly bitter

I was going to make one today, but didn't get time this morning so I'm going to make one tomorrow. I just need to watch the clip of him showing how to shape it because whenever I've tried before, it expands outwards in a funny shape because I've not tucked it away properly.

People's tastebuds get accustomed to things, so if they are used to the supermarket tasteless pap, then that's what they'll prefer. It can take a while to get used to real bread. I know when I started to make my own, it took a while for my children to get used to it, but they've been eating it for years now and prefer it. The same with cakes - bought cakes always have a funny taste to them (probably all the preservatives). They are the only people they know who get homemade bread, cakes, chutneys, jams, etc and they say they are very lucky (their friends are envious).

You can never watch enough of Mr Hollywood! I'm really pleased it tastes great, the shape may just have been beginners luck. I've not done this before but think I'm hooked :) I'm going to try the ale/rye bread this afternoon and really fancy making the malt loaf at some stage ( I may end up about 15 stone though that scares me a bit!)
