  • If this is correct, it makes me think twice as if I upgrade years down the line to a canon, my nikon lenses won't work?

This is the case whether you go for Nikon or Canon; the different manufacturers have different fittings.

Both have third party lenses designed to fit them, but a Nikon fit Sigma or Tamron will not fit a Canon camera and a Canon fit Sigma or Tamron will not fit a Nikon camera.

There may be the option of a lens adaptor to make one fit the other (although I don't know anything about this; perhaps someone who does can shed some light. I think I remember hearing that you can get a Nikon lens to Canon body adaptor but perhaps not the other way round).

BUT...generally when you go either Nikon/Canon you are buying into the whole system, unless you plan on selling all your lenses and starting again.

Ken is very readable but a number of photographers have issues with his opinions so don't use him as your only source of information. Look here for prices http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/index.php
But slow down use what you have bought before rushing off to buy more stuff. Kit lenses are normally good value for money and time spent using it will help you decide what you want next. When you get to that stage there are a number of competing properties of lenses to consider.

    Ah okay, understanding more.

So most canon & nikon have built in motor lenses available now

And I can get 3rd party lenses with motors to fit each body
That's great as I thought I was restricted to JUST nikon

I did know re non interchangeability but stupidly thought single 3rd party fitted both bodies, hence I thought I could move to canon later with all my invested lenses

Only now do I understand the gravity of my decision in this 'system'. Perhaps my first thread should be 'canon or nikon':rotfl:

Having had a canon bridge lets hope I get used to nikon...do currys do refunds on dslr after opening incase :rotfl:

Don't worry there is very little between Canon and Nikon and once you have learnt how to use your camera you won't want to change.

Have you thought about getting a book on the d5100.

Thanks I was just worried about lack of body motor but lenses with motor are common & not much more

Was also worried that I could only buy nikon Len, but that's not true

I know now I can't change to canon. That's fine I guess, I bought the best camera with the budget and happy to learn & stay in the nikon system and learn to use the body & kit. Realistically I'll probably only end up with a few lenses & body shouldn't need upgrading for years

There are a couple of reasonable instruction videos on you tube might be worth a look.

Good point. I have the Magic Lantern guide and it's very useful

something worth considering if you are new to all this is Scott Selby's books. My dad had my old Canon off me and I bought these for him. He explains things really well, and writes for Nikon and Canon within the same text

+1 for this great lens, annoyingly £40 cheaper than when I bought mine!
