As some of you know, the mse gods ushered me into the world of dslr with my nikon 5100 which I will soon receive with kit lens
Which 2 essential lens would you buy?
Where's best to buy?
What are the lens I can use? Sigma, nikon and tamron?
If I upgrade the body to another brand years on, are all sigma & tamron interchangeable?
I like zooming into details and doing landscapes so which lens do I need and which sites explain the different lens - haven a clue :rotfl:
Thanks :T

As i mentioned in your first thread (regarding the camerabody itself) I have for my Canon 600D a Sigma 10-20mm lens. Basically it's really wide (bought it for shooting building and landscapes in New York) and it's an awesome lens for landscape photography. Im pretty sure Sigma make it for both Nikon and Canon, and I couldnt recommend it enough (if you think you would get use of it). It enables you to catch such a large amount of image in your frame, and the photos it produces are stunning...
I am hoping to get some of my New York stuff printed to put up around my house now...
Here's a quick link to it on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-10-20mm-f4-5-6-Nikon-Lens/dp/B0007U00XK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363620729&sr=8-1
might be worth checking camera price buster for cheaper deals0 -
Dams that's dear! Might one for the future as I like landscaping
Any zoom reccs?
What to be able to keep lenses forever
Btw I'll be keeping my dslr in a padded dslr bag
What are the best storage product for lens?
Any cleaning product for lens & dslr?0 -

There are quite a few reviews here also look at nikon full frame as some of them will work on your camera.
Remember yout camera does not have a focus motor in body so you want to use autofocus you will need a lens with one built in AF-S on nikon lenses.
I have a Tamron 70-300mm and although they make it in various mounts each lens fits only one make, I think this is pretty much the case for most third party lenses now.0 -
Is the lack of built in focus in the motor a bad thing ? Does it apply to manual & auto focusing ?
I can't use lenses unless it has a built in focus ? So does that mean ones with built in are a little dearer (I think I read?)
Do brands to some lenses with built in focus and half without ?
Hmm wonder if this will be a problem...if I get a body with built in autofocus in the future, would this make my lenses with built in focus redundant ? Or counter act the body's auto focus0 -
If the D5100 does not have a motor in the body then you will need to have a motor in the lens to have auto focus normally an AFS lens. 3rd party lenses are available with motors in them. If you buy one for your Nikon body it will not fit on a Canon camera. Which lens/lenses you buy will depend on what subjects you shoot and how much you wish to spend. I would suggest that you wait a little and use the kit lens for a while because that will help you make up your mind about which focal lengths would be best for you.0

Should be in your manual also.
General most new lenses now have built in motor and that is what is used even if body has built in motor.
They are not normally more expensive the problem is that some good secondhand lenses will not focus and may be meter.0 -
I have read ken Rockwell piece on this as i was worried I made a mistake :rotfl:
So I can use this camera will many lenses (modern ones)
But only nikon modern lenses because 3rd party (sigma etc) don't have AF built in?
So essentially I have to continue buying into nikon? Can't buy sigma, tamron etc? If this is correct, it makes me think twice as if I upgrade years down the line to a canon, my nikon lenses won't work?
I'm happy not needing old nikon lenses as the new have built in motors, but I'm stuck with nikon bodies if I can't buy 3rd party lens ?0 -
It really depends on your budget and what you want to do with your camera but, as I said on your previous thread, these two lenses are great value to get you started:
55-200 VR
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-55-200MM-4-5-6-AF-S-Black/dp/B000O161X0
35mm f/1.8
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-35mm-f1-8G-Lens/dp/B001S2PPT0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1363623764&sr=1-1
(They may well be cheaper elsewhere, that's just links to Amazon)
Good advice from photodgm about playing with your kit lens for a while first. It didn't take me long to realise I wanted to zoom, hence the 55-200 coming pretty much straight away. The 35mm prime lens was a later addition; I was taking a lot of indoor portraits so the wide aperture was very appealing. It does give a lovely DOF and is great for low light.0 -

You can get third party lenses, but they will need to be Nikon fit (if you had a Canon they would need to be Canon fit) and will have to have a built in AF motor if you want to use AF.

No the Tamron 70-300mm I have has a built in motor and is very good and about £100 less than Nikon equiv.
As has been said use your kit lens and see how you get on then when you have found it's limitations you can decide whay you need, good lenses can be expensive and will probably out last your camera so you want to make sure you get the right ones.0
