Modern common rail diesel cars are designed to work as one unit so that if one injector fails it will still run, albeit not as efficiently as it would with all 4. We had this actual problem on a 55 plate TDCI fiesta Zetec and it was the shortest one/lead that failed - it is nearly always that one apparently. Part of the problem was caused by Ford failing to change any filters in all the time they serviced it from new, we aquired it in 08 at just under 3 years old and it went wrong not long after that. Just out of warrenty. Had it fixed and that went wrong as they put a trainee on it, who was unsupervised so more problems ocured so in the end we took it to Ford who this time did fix the Injector and clean the engine as they should have done. Original garage settled up 50% costs with us over the bodge.
However one thing I did learn about the Cat's they put on these cars is that every so often you should go for a longer run at a good speed as this helps to clear out any clogging in the system and you do not then get the build up problems and the car then stays healthier.

If normal level of mileage clocked up every year, this would have occurred within 18 months of new. .

If normal level of mileage clocked up every year, this would never have occurred at all. It's a classic low mileage problem. Who buys a common-rail diesel and then uses it to go to the shops once a week?
  • What a surprise, main dealer can't diagnose a problem and the only remedy is brand new parts.

You don't take Diesels to the main dealer when they have running problems unless they are under makers warranty, and then its debatable with certain makes that they won't consult the book of fiddles/excuses to blame the owner and charge them anyway.

You take the car to a Diesel specialist workshops, a good one, this has always been the case, if you don't know of a good one ask taxi owner drivers of various makes where they go.

    Say no more.

    You are not correct.

The 1.6d and 2.0d engines were designed under a joint agreement between Ford, Volvo and PSA Group.

Most 1.6d engines are made in the Ford engine plant in Dagenham, though this will change soon as Ford are moving production.

The 1.6d is widely ackownledged to be a "chocolate" engine in the motor trade with common issues being turbo failure and injector problems.

The OP needs to start using some decent injector cleaner, if possible starting with Wynns Professional use stuff that you put in the filter at fuel filter change time, then follow up with regular dosing with Redex or similar.

And avoid such things as Tesco or other supermarket fuels as they do not contain as many additives as mainstream diesel.

This is nothing to do with who refines the diesel it is solely to do wih the additive package added by other retailers and supermarkets sticking to the minimum possible but still meeting the legal minimum requirements.

Also a cat converter is not the same as a DPF.

I am not sure but I don't think a 2007 Fiesta 1.6d had a Dpf fitted, if it did it would be a system with an Eloys additive tank.

hardly an "engine failure" is it - agree with the earlier posts, its an injector failure caused by lack of use in a 6year old car - it happens - replace it and move on.

£200 or less at a specialist Ford garage or any decent garage.
