Ford engine failure after 18000 miles

Problem occurred within first year of 2007 Ford Fiesta diesel, with engine misfiring. Went in, twice, under warranty and agent could not find fault as computer did not register a problem, and it was intermittent. Fault registered with Fords Customer Care centre. Feb 2013, with only 18000 miles on the clock, loss of power and warning lights on dash created a failure code within computer and this time agent 'found' the fault as a sticking injector. Charged over £500 for this, Ford's not admitting liability. This item should last the life of the car, 100k miles +, so how can it be not their problem? Anybody else with this problem?
Have been told by a secret insider that this is a general problem with modern diesels as the catalytic converter design does not do the job properly.
If normal level of mileage clocked up every year, this would have occurred within 18 months of new. Ford state that this is 37 months outside warranty, which suggests this part only has a 28 month warranty. What does this fit in with? Where does it say that? How can it be designed down to this level without many other car failures?
I believe Sale of Good Act states that if the goods do not last as long as they should, they can be considered fault from the beginning. Comments and suggestions please.

18000 miles on a 6 year old diesel? Whats the link between the injector fault and problem with the cat (I presume your 'insider' is referring to the DPF burn off not occurring when a diesel isn't driven properly)

The DPF is fitted downstream of the cat.

The statement that this is a general problem with modern diesels as the catalytic converter design does not do the job properly is vague and woolly in the extreme. What job?

Cars like to be used - 18,000 miles in 6 years is only 3,000 mile per year. Under-using a car can to lead to faults occurring that would not have otherwise occurred if the car had covered significantly more miles.

we are talking about an Engine, but as the saying goes, you learn something new every day.
Ford now use French diesels, they must have thought that their own was too reliable.

I am not sure on the time frame but I think that Ford could use the low mileage against you.
