fuel and dpf filters are completley different, when you go to a fuel storage facility there is only one diesel tank, all lorries are filled from the same tank regardless of their destination and then companies put in the additives to make their fuel unique, aside from carelessness by the driver/petrol station allowing water to enter all this dirty diesel carp is just the garages way of saying "i dont know what im going on about"

I thought the fuel filter and the particle filter were different things, and the threads I was looking to have merged are all about fuel filters.

They are different, it might help to change your first post to specifically refer to fuel filters. I thought you were talking about DPF's as they are also considered a big problem with diesels.

The statement of supermarket/filter/diesel I thought made it pretty clear he was referring to fuel filters and supermarket fuel.

Unless they're making Tesco value DPFs now, which turn out to actually be a tea strainer welded into a piece of straight pipe.

I wouldn't say it's clear at all as I've seen far more comments blaming supermarket fuel for DPF issues than I have for fuel filter issues, I wasn't even aware of the latter.

I've driven 400,000 miles in 3 diesel cars in 21 years, and not had a problem, despite not draining or changing fuel filter as often as recommended.

At least half of that fuel was bought at 4 branches of Sainsburys, and in some years perhaps 20 to 25 percent in a dozen countries abroad including some supermarkets such as Tesco in Hungary or Leclerc or Auchan in France.

I'm not saying there are no problems at all, but I don't think there's any reason for some hysterical suspicion that supermarkets would be any worse risk for the very rare problems that occur than at any other places.

I have also driven similar miles to you in diesels and never come across the problem until this winter. My car has been fine but 2 of my colleagues cars have not.

I always use supermarket fuel, not sure who you are implying is being hysterical? What I can say from seeing with my own eyes and reading many forums, that this year in particular it has been a probelm and is costing motorists their hard earned to put right.

Both problems I have witnessed first hand were in temperatures of around -10

Not once have I blamed supermarkets, but someone is to blame!

I think you may have hinted at this in another thread, but isn't it the technology in cars - super eco clean, dpf, catalytic converters which could be causing the problem?
Our Octavia is an old diesel (2006) so it will run on anything, but the later generation seem to be struggling.
