Not a very mature way of handling stress, is it? It all sounds so artificial and contrived, and I don't like being a guinea-pig to help you with your self-induced angst; I thought this was going to be a proper discussion but I should have known better.

It is a proper discussion and it is an important issue that people with physical disablities can not have any support with their studies at university. If dyslexics get support then so should people with physical disabilities.

    YOU'RE GETTING 25% EXTRA TIME!!!!!

Doesn't that count as support??!! Or do you want someone else to do the exams for you so you can spend 24/7 whining and moaning on here?

    Hang on, I'm confused.

Earlier you said that you get extra time of 25% for exams. You also said you are not dyslexic. So you do get extra support and you do have a physical disability.

EDIT: Just noticed that BW posted almost the same post at exactly the same time! Great minds think alike!

The truth is that Phil doesn't know what he's saying really, except he has a huge chip on his shoulder about the issue 'du jour' and it's always someone else's fault and he's always hard done by. It's an excuse to witter on and not revise. He's going to be a wonderful star employee, I'm sure.

Yes, but maybe people with physical disabilities need support with their work too like dyslexics. It is not just about is there a lift and a disabled toilet if you are physically disabled you know. You can also need help with doing your essays, using the library, help with forms, help with ways to cope with finding worrk very tiring.

But yet if you are physically disabled if you can get in the building and there is a disabled toilet that seems the end of the help you can get.

I have a friend at uni who was a victim of the thalidomide tragedy. He has to use a motorised wheelchair and have constant support. Because of the deformities he has, he can't physically type or write. However, he's very intelligent and is on course for a first, and although quite rightly he needs physical allowances to be made for him to be able to be fully integrated, no allowances have been made for him in an academic respect. He would be deeply offended if it was suggested that he was given an 'easier' degree just because of his disabilities.

University is an academic environment. For a degree to be worth anything it has to be standardised and the marks have to be comparable. You seem to be suggesting that more allowances should be made for students who find the work more difficult, which is ridiculous! Not everyone can excel academically, regardless of whether they have disabilities or not. Equally, academic achievement is not dependent on whether you're as physically able as the next person, hence the story about my friend. If university suits you, then you'll do well, if not, you won't - like I said, not everyone can excel academically and to start handing out allowances just because some people find the work difficult would devalue a struggling system even more. As I said in a previous post, there is a point at which you can't just compensate someone by making the work easier - it's unrealistic and patronising.

I wholeheartedly agree with that point.

My college are having difficulties accommodating my exam needs at the moment and the suggestion was made that I could get given a 'buffer' where they take into account my difficulties and add a percentage to my marks! I was bloody disgusted at the suggestion. I will do my exams and I will probably struggle since they haven't fulfilled their duty, but at least I can say I did it.

All exam boards explicit instructions are: to provide all students with the same resources which they have access to during lectures.

Why do I witter, because I find the whole degree and university life impossible to cope with. It is not about a chip on my shoulder, but a reality that I find the degree impossible & that is a real thing.
