    You can do it online now through the GOV portal, you will need your DVLA CofE [certificate of exemption number] once you have entered that CofE number that first time the portal will allow you to tax exempt yourself every year thereafter with no problems providing you continue to qualify. It, the portal will already know if the vehicle is insured and tested. Its a totally paperless application system.

    Ok that's the process for the new car, how do I de-register it from the old car unless disabled road tax can be have on more than one car?

    You do it on the portal. Look your entitlement is to free of cost road tax. You do not and never did transfer tax or even exemption. Put simply when you apply they give you a new 12 months exemption. To help you understanding is you :

    - had a car with a tax disk you paid for, you applied for and got 12 months exemption, and claimed the remaining full months back as money ;

    - had a disabled exemption on a car you bought in January and sold that car in June you would get a new 12 months exemption on your new car ;

    - had that new car you bought in June, found you didn't like it, and bought a new automatic car in September [3 cars in 1 year] you would still get a new 12 months exemption on your new car.

    To de-register your old car you send your completed V5C or V62 with the change of tax class [or get the buyer to do it] to DVLA and they send you back an updated V5C, and, as someone else has said you can do it at a 'general' post office.

    Ok I plan to buy a SORN car tomorrow (Saturday). The SORN car has MOT but no tax and insurance.

    How do I transfer disabled road tax to the SORN car? Will SORN status turn off automatically once I get the car taxed or insured or both? Or do I have to do more paperwork to get the SORN status off?

    It has to be taxed AND insured. You need to change the taxation class of the vehicle to disabled to apply a disabled tax disc.

    Do i need the full logbook of the new car so i can change taxation class? What if seller doesn't give me full log book and just gives me the green new keeper supplement section only after buying it?

    I'm sorry i can't help you with this one. A simple phone call to DVLA would get your answer quicker than waiting this long for a reply :)

    Ok so if I buy a new car tomorrow I can get disabled road tax for the new car straight away or will the computer at the post office say 'no' because I did not change the taxation class from disabled to normal on my old car that I haven't sold yet?

    If that's the case then do I have to change the taxation class to normal on my old car 1st before getting disabled road tax on the new car because I am only allowed 1 disable road tax on 1 car?

    It will say no until you change the taxation class to disabled.
