What supermarket ground coffee do you recommend?

  • I find supermarket coffee too harsh unless otherwise but have completely fallen in love with my Union Roasted 500g pcm subscription.
http://www.unionroasted.com/ who have won Great Taste Awards, always a safe bet IMHO.
I imagine Monmouth is also good like other Independent outlets but my first month of Union Roasted is proving outstanding.

WBQMS I had some Union from Ocado and hated it. OH doesn't drink coffee at all and I only drink it at weekends so I buy Lofbergs

If you are ever in Carlisle, try John Watt's shop. (Also available online). They fill the street with coffee roasting smoke every day!

Glad to see they're still going - used to love the smell (and noisy churning roaster sound) of their coffee when walking along Bank St.

I left the north 16 years ago and annoyingly I've just this year discovered proper coffee so can't visit Watt's as 220 miles is a bit far to go (though I'm back for Easter so may pop in - thanks for reminding me about them!)

I'm trying the various beans from supermarkets but nothing's really grabbed me yet.

I wonder how the swearword one can get IKEA coffee seing as it is so highly regarded. I find IKEA a most difficult store to use. Unlike amazon I cannot click and buy and instead am forced on a wild goose chase.
I think Ikea has lost it and there are two coffee related items I would like to buy.

The advantage of online is one can try different coffees and find out what works for you, body chemistry, palate, foodiness, knowledge of food and above all budget skills not withstanding.'Foodie-ness = working class women used to cook good food on low budget and had an acute awareness of food to do so, that sense, not pretentious trendy sense.

I use Waitrose Espresso ground (silver tin) for my Espresso machine and also use the same coffee in my cafetiere. It's very similar to Illy but much cheaper (£3.44 a tin).

I use Taylors Lava Java in my Aeropress at work - there are reviews here http://www.coffeejudge.co.uk/taylors-hot-lava-java-coffee I know that beans are better but I don't have the time or patience to grind small amounts at work.

We have a bean to cup machine at home and as with others use Lavazza beans from Costco.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the ground coffee in Lidl's with two 250g packs in one, in a dark brown packet. Not sure of the name - Guatemalan I think - but it's nice medium strength coffee and the fact that it is in two packs helps it to stay fresh. About £4.50 now for 500g - I can remember when it cost £1.99 and that wasn't so long ago!
