Yes thankyou!:D Trolleyrun, when you have time could you tell us more about turbulance. I want to know everything. Thank you very much

Another thank you from me too.
Although I am much better than i used to be , it still only takes the seatbelt lights to go on , and the familiar panic begins to rear it's ugly head. I can be more rational nowadays , and reading these posts it is clear that turbulence seems to be the issue for most people.
So I will be reading any info over and over again :rotfl:
( especially as I have a flight in approx 6 weeks ...my honeymoon :heart:)

I have spent many an hour reading up on commercial flying, what the noises are, where turbulence comes from etc etc. it's all clear in my mind and makes perfect sense when I have my feet on the ground.

As soon as the plane start to trundle down the runway, all common sense disappears.

A couple of years ago we hit a bit of turbulence not long after take off, I was clinging onto the seat in front and got spotted by the cabin crew:o. They gathered round and started telling me it was fine, it's just the plane bumping off the clouds:rotfl: they kept popping back to talk to me throughout the flight which was really nice of them but I was so mortified.

I am amazed that so many people are frightened of flying! I agree with the 'knowledge is power' idea of reducing your anxiety by knowing what all the little bumps and noises mean etc. The overcoming fear of flying course sounds great too.
But what can you do when you are not actually frightened of flying, but cannot bear to travel by plane as you are rampantly claustrophobic? Especially those cramped little planes used for short haul flights?
I used to be able to deal with my very long standing claustrophobia reasonably well, but over the last few years, it has become much more acute and the associated anxiety is spilling into other travel arrangements :-(

I wanted to re-awaken this thread as I am flying in 3 weeks......helllllppppp:eek:

My husband is very excited and keeps going on about it and I am preparing for the worst.

I am so scared I am even writing notes for someone to look after my dog if we crash :(

I cant afford to go on a fear of flying course and its too late anyway. I have read a few facts on plane accidents but I have had to stop as i started to feel sick.

Any pilots on here who can give me a kick up the backside?

It's not the flying that I'm afraid of - it's the airport.
    still raining

My fear of flying is practically zero but still make sure my will is up-to-date before I go on a long trip away.

Colleensims - pm me your address. I finally got round to reading the Alan Carr book mentioned earlier in the thread and it's amazing - I feel totally relaxed about flying for the first time in years! I'll pop it in the post on Monday.

    Thats very kind of you.:j:A
  • Lurk constantly on MSE, but felt I had to post here. I was TERRIFIED of flying- even with diazepam my stomach was upset for days before hand, I wept for half the flight, would squeal if there was turbulance and get heartburn with anxiety. I was totally convinced we were going to die and could not being myself to talk about after we landed lest I "temp fate".

But I am just back from my first holiday (7 hour flights) when I did not feel anxious at all. I am pregnant and could not take the diazepam so I bought a book from Amazon- Fly without fear by Keith Godfrey. There is a free website which has lots of the same information if you google flying without fear. I only had time really to read the first half of the book, which has loads of facts about flying. When I flew I was albsolutley fine which was a total surprise given how nervous I had previously been. I would totally recommend the book. Best money I have spent. I used to be so nervous and am really pleased.

You can overcome your fear- it's really not too scary once you learn more about it.

Go to the doctor and get some tranquillisers - they can be very effective.
