Is it rude because she didn't want to engage in small talk with someone who appears to be quite short tempered?
She's there to do a job, not be your friend.
Yes I do consider it rude to ignore a customers greeting.
Friendship not required merely common courtesy of hello and perhaps thanks would have done.
Your comment about my temper is completely wide of the mark, and even if it was true, how on earth would she pick that up in our short almost silent encounter.0 -

You can tell by the eyes if someone's a bit crazy.

How devastating for you...
Maybe someone she knows had just been diagnosed with cancer and she was in shock. Or maybe she just didn't like you. Who knows...
To be fair, they didn't say it was devastating (just said they were a bit cheesed off) and they just posted it as a vent in the appropriate forum.
Companies pay a lot of money in training to get staff to work in a certain way, because they know customers like to be treated in a certain way. There are a good number of consumers that would refuse to go back to a shop where the staff treat them rudely.
In my view, a member of staff refusing to properly acknowledge a customer is rude unless there are specific circumstances why it isn't practical to acknowledge them. In my opinion it's discourteous to the employer and to the customer, however much retail work can often be a thankless job.0 -

What rubbish you do post but I guess everyone is entitled to freedom of expression on these boards some thing you would do well to remember.0 -

On checkouts at Asda I found myself being a robot sometimes. But that didn't mean I was silent, we were trained to say 'hello, would you like help packing?' and 'have a good day' or something like that and sometimes even 'sorry about the delay'. But I found myself in busy times like Christmas me talking the spiel without realising and sometimes not even looking the customer in the eye!0

Given Wilkinson well advertised equal employment policies, perhaps she was profoundly deaf or unable to speak?0
-
"Went into my local Wilkinsons store to-day have always found the staff friendly and helpful, until now.
Approached the check out, said hello, no response, she then started to scan the items and I asked for a bag which I was given still no comment from her to my thanks for the bag.She then rang up the total and held out her hand for the cash"...
At this point you could have just stood there and waited until she TOLD you the total or said 'That will be £xx.xx (please).
You're complaining about her lack of interaction - by the same token YOU didn't speak to HER.
