Well i have claimed on my home insurance, who incidentally were great, they knew that ipads were not repaired. they just took the details off me never asked for proof of purchase, receipt or anything, 10 mins later they were transferring money into my account, minus £50 excess

Anyone else asking same, but have higher insurance excess, see what these people quote you:

It would be a mail order jobby.
  • Are there any updates on this? My 7 year old cracked my screen - ipad mini- cant believe the cost of replacement quoted on here. Are there any other suggestions? many thanks.

It's a premium product, costs a lot to fix. The result from this one, aside the spam post, and the useful pointing out of self promotional posts was it was done through insurance.

First step would be finding out if you have anyone physically that can do it close to you, they will be cheaper than a genius job. Be aware of posting it off to a place you don't know (you could lose the ipad completely)

The other suggestion is not to let a 7 year old play with an expensive fragile piece of equipment, but that's a bit late :/

Granger Games offer a service via a 3rd party(whose name I have forgotten). A friend needed an ipad 3 screen replacing and Granger's charge for this fix was about 90 quid.
Replacement screens and digitisers are on sale at ebay but the price varies wildly and you don't know which ones would work and which ones wouldn't. Also replacing the screen looks to be a tad tricky. It is something I would attempt on my own ipad but with zero experience, I don't have the guts to give it a go on someone else's.

So did you call the folks at post #14 and what did they say? The answer might advance our knowledge a bit and we can move on from there.

Yes there are some posts saying Apple is expensive to repair, then again cheap products are disposable.

For others chancing on this thread, kids & Apple don't usually mix, except when you make use of the many clever accessories like those rubber rings and cases that fit neatly round an Apple iPad to make it shockproof.

DS broke his screen, we listed it on ebay with lots of pics and description and it sold for £170, meant only needed £90 to replace with brand new one. Apple wanted £229 to replace I think!

    That is debatable.

They are certainly sold in a controlled market so everything is charged at a premium.

Nice to see they are making really cheap affordable plastic iphones for the Chinese market now. US$549 in the US, US$ 733 in China apparently (tariffs and VAT the reason given). Be interesting to see if it dinks Samsung et al..

  • My ipad mini dropped from less than a foot and has developed a crack on the side.

Rather than repairing it I am wondering if it is worth putting on one of those invisible scratch prof films that should hopefully contain the crack from expanding.

Has anyone any experience with this?

They're called screen protectors, and people usually put them on BEFORE using the device in order to prevent the screen from scratching. It also helps to provide some degree of impact protection.

Putting one on AFTER the screen is cracked is probably of limited benefit. Although for the cost of a screen protector it's maybe worth a try.
