Asda

I need some help. Bought the weekly shopping as usual on Wednesday evening. The amount I spend wavers each week depending on how much meat etc I buy. Didn't check my receipt until last night and saw that I had been charged 14.95 for a table lamp. Went to the store this morning and explained my situation and a store manager came to see me and said that the light was coming upp as being sold on Wednesday. I explained that of course it would as it had gone through the till (on my receipt). he said that he could do nothong about it. I do not want to leave it like this as they have literally robbed me of nearly £15. I only realised as it was a large anount of money and it said table lamp. Problem I have is how do I prove I did not have this lamp in my trolley. Could someone give me some idea of how this can be resolved.

    Oh that's not a nice situation to be in. All I could suggest is calling Asda HQ Customer Services and trying them instead.

    its only a thought but stick by your guns, ask to see the manager again, be nice and assertive and ask him if it would bee possible to have a look at the cctv footage of you at the checkout if it is available, i assume that they do monitor the checkout area and it would be hard not to stop a lamp being checked through the till.

    One more note on asda, my partner has been twice recently and requested £10 cashback on each occasion, the first time she did'nt receive the money and did'nt realise until she got in the house, (stressful day), she phoned the branch and luckily got the money back, the second occasion she never received the money but noticed there and then, the girl apologised and opened the till again, So just a word of warning to all, good luck.

  • Thanks for the advice. Think I'll go back tonight with all my 3 small children in tow and ask to see the CCTV as they were with me when I was shopping. I'll let you know what happens on Monday.

    something similar happened to me last year in ASDA. I noticed an item that I know I didn't buy on my receipt. The cost was about £5.50 and when I rang, they checked the product number, rather than the item, on their computer and it turned out to be a local paper (which I did buy) which costs about 45p!
    It was a drag to go back but at least they were aware of the situation and I got it re-imbursed a couple of weeks later.
  • Opposite of this has happened to me.

    Had gone to get my usual bit of shopping from Asda and thought I would have a bottle of red wine. Anyway got home and the bottle is nowhere to be seen, but I had been charged for it on my receipt. So go back to the shop the next day and ask at customer services if anybody had handed it in / knew anything about it. No luck, so I just presumed that the lucky punter behind me in the queue picked up the bottle!

    But what can you do without any proof ???

    This might be a bit of a long shot but worth a try.
    I suppose its success or failure depends on how many items you bought, how many you've still got unused sitting in the fridge, freezer, the pantry, a cupboard etc...,, how many you've still got the packaging for and hence the BARCODE (even if this means emptying your dustbin), and how good your memory is ! (and whether the dustman has made a collection since Wednesday)

    Right, assuming that you did not actually buy the lamp, and assuming that there was not a lamp (or its barcode ticket) sitting on the checkout that got scanned accidently, or that the lamp's barcode ticket got scanned deliberately by the checkout operator as part of the shopping belonging to whoever was in front or behind you at the checkout, or the operator is "bent" and running some sort of scam that means that they have the lamp illumination their own home, THEN.......

    ...... unless the till's laser scanned someone in a striped shirt standing at the adjacent checkout, (or perhaps a ZEBRA walked by?).....then unless it just invented this item out of thin air ........

    ... something that you did buy, that did end up in your carrier bags, that you did take home, either got mis-scanned somehow OR had the wrong barcode on it (ie the one for the lamp)

    Now, assuming I'm right, the simplest way to find this item depends on your memory.

    If you can remember everything you bought (say 50 items) and you check the receipt and there are 50 items on it INCLUDING the lamp, then the item that is not on the receipt is the one that got mis-scanned or has the wrong barcode.
    OK it's not as difficult as I've suggested because you dont have to remember ALL the (50?) items, the receipt in my example will tell you what 49 of the items are, what you have to do is remember the 50th !!!

    Then you need to find this item, or at least its outer wrapper, and whatever barcode it has attached.

    Hopefully it will be the wrong one or maybe damaged or defaced in some manner that caused the error.
    If you do locate the item and it does not have the lamp's barcode on it, hopefully the "damaged/defaced" barcode will mis-scan again at an ASDA checkout and come up with the lamp's code !

    Something that might assist this process is the fact that ASDA receipts have both a "description" and the barcode (except the last digit) as well as the price for each item purchased.

    However I doubt it.

    BUT, if I am correct , your reply did jog my memory re ASDA's mispricing policy.

    If what I suugest is correct and the product at fault can be found and returned, not only will ASDA refund the difference (£14.34 in your example - £14.99 - 65p) but they will also give you a £2 gift voucher to spend in the store because of their error.

  • I work as a checkout operator and I know that mistakes can occur on the till when items are scanned.

    A few weeks ago I was serving a lady when I noticed an item come up on the screen for babywear £3.50. I hadn't scanned any babywear and when I asked the lady she said she hadn't bought anything for a baby. We checked the last few items I had scanned and didn't find anything. The supervisor cleared the screen of all the items and I scanned everything again with this time no sign of the babywear.

    It's a mystery to me but somehow I suppose the machine managed to pick up this particular barcode. Good luck with trying to get your money back.
  • Hi, I spent all day thinking about what I had bought on Wednesday evening at about 3.30pm I remembered I had bought some of their extra special mince meat which was not on the receipt. Go home and took it out of the freezer and I checked the bar code and there was one digit wrong. (I presume it must have been manually input). Picked all 3 children and off to ASDA we went. I asked to speak to the manager who was working that morning as was told that he was not there but there was another mamanger who could help. I explained that the whole stoy of the lamp and that I had been in that morning to query it as the previous manager had bluntky told me that I must have purchsed it and end of story. I then produced my frozen mince and asked her if this could be the offending item as it was one digit out and she said that as the bar code was not a good one it may have scanned in wrong is mistyped. Then I made a complaint about the manager for his lack of simpathy for a custome and belief in the general public. i told her that he made me feel as if I was doing something wrong and did not belive a word which I said and I quoted that he actually said that I sould have looked at the receipt and I told her that as weekly shopper at ASDA i trusted their system and had never had reason to double check the recepit. She then offered to pay for my petrol and I said that the petrol money was not what I was after. I explained that I had been there before work at 8.20am and was there again at 5.00pm after having gone home to pick up the meat and children and had to go there again mainly to prove that I was not a liar and to speak to him (the manager) and his superiors about the situation as I let feeling as if I was wrongly trying to obtain money from ASDA. She agreed to give me £20 as a good will gesture and I will be getting a letter sometime this week once that have spoken to the manager on duty that morning.

    I am now in two minds about ASDA, and will see the outcome of the letter and how they are going to address the issue.
