MP3 player for child?

Would you say it's ok to give a 7-year-old an MP3 player (just a basic one) as a gift? I'm a bit out of it when it comes to kids and gadgets but I know he is due to go on holiday in the summer and I thought it might keep him occupied when he's on the plane. I suppose usually I would associate an MP3 player with an older child or teen, but he seems to like listening to mine when I go round there!

I would check with parents if child isn't yours.
Basic ones aren't always child friendly due to menu's, fiddly controls etc. Also get a set of child friendly headphones as the in ear ones aren't good for hearing or comfortable for those with small ears0 -
I think it's a great idea. Mine are 11 and 14 now but have each had them for 4 or 5 years (currently iPod touches but they both had basic ones to begin with)and have always got good use from them.0

I did wonder if headphones would be ok for a child's ears. Trying to think back to how old I was when I got a stereo (as it was then :rotfl:)0

Age is fine IMO but as said its parents choice whether they let them use it so i would check
Groove kids headphones (Amazon sell) are great for smaller ears and come in lots of colours - pretty good sound for price as well0 -
Hi
My 7 year old has a sansa clip mp3 player. They are great for audio books as well as music.

Perfect, lovely idea.
He loves listening to yours, so will be lovely for him to remember you each time he listens to it0 -

I didn't think of audio books, great idea. He loves books and reading.Counting_Pennies wrote: »Perfect, lovely idea.

I'd better not put my music onto it. Not sure he'll want auntie's old tunes from the 80s/90s/noughties :rotfl:0 -
I know that you can limit the maximum volume on an ipod so that he won't accidentally turn it up too loud and damage his ears. Personally I think ipods are too expensive for a seven year old but it would be useful to know whether other models also have this feature.
Other than that, I think it's a lovely idea."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Oh it wouldn't be an ipod, - as you say they're too expensive. I think you can get ordinary mp3 players for not very much money but I haven't looked into it really, yet.0
