The £60 fine will likely be peanuts compared with the effect it will have on his insurance premiums for the next few years................

It will probably have no effect whatsoever.

My dad got stopped by the police yesterday afternoon for doing 42 in a 30 which is fair enough but was given both a £60 fine and 3 points on his license. Is this not a bit extreme to be given both?

At 42mph, sounds like your dad is one of these that does 42mph on every single road, in every single speed limit. The Police won't look kindly upon that.

In a shocking turn of events Aston Villa have admitted to driving the Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne's car and have claimed the three points.

How can you possibly draw that conclusion based on the information posted?

Because not once have I ever seen someone do 40ish in a 30, followed by 60 in the next NSL.

You have two types of driver..... The first does the speed limit on every road, the second isn't paying attention and just does 42 everywhere. The former are often demonised by the later.

But you cant stop in as short a distance as if you were doing 30.

Not preaching just stating the obvious. I've had my own points just a year ago for a lot, lot worse. Learnt my lesson the hard way.
