Apart from myself I feel that there is almost no one else in the whole of the UK not doing 40mph in a 30 limit so your dad was very unlucky.
I am tail gated and overtaken mercilessly for keeping to the limit, even 35 isn't enough for (well lets face it and be honest here ) - everyone.
I am willing to bet that the cops speed gun scanned approx 500 cars that day and I bet 480+ were either at or approaching 40mph - a lucrative day no doubt.
The fine and points are standard so he will sadly have to cough up, I doubt he will slow down that much though -merely take notice of the spot he was busted at and adjust his driving accordingly at key points.
Speeding is totally rife on the roads of the UK, it is almost our national pastime. I worry less on a motorway but when I see yet another BMW/Vectra or Corsa launching itself along a row of parked cars yet again at 10-15 mph over the limit my heart always sits in my mouth even though I am sat waiting patiently to let them through at the other end.
I am just waiting for one of the council kids to run out and crack their heads on the bumper or wing at 45 mph.0 -
Will someone please think of the chil.... oh wait, cybermat has.
Where does your dad live, OP? I'll be round with my pitchfork and bricks.0 -
i bet half the police force speed ( to be read as just going over the speed limit) on their way home/to work.
Even though i find it hard to drive to the speed limit, once you do, i find it quite relaxing actually.0 -

I'm amazed this question needed to be asked actually. Dad needs to keep his eye on his speed.
However, if you, sorry your dad do really feel hard done to try asking for advice on the pepipoo website as they will help you put a case together if possible. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
It's points and money and always has been.
At one point there was going to be a two point penalty plus monetary fine for marginal infringements but that seems to have disappeared probably because it was sensible.
Whilst there is no legal defence to doing 42 in a 30mph the authorities hurl all their common sense out of the window when assessing speed limits so you get ordinary residential roads where there is a school so 20mph but not in school hours but also on summer Sundays. 40 mph warnings on a motorway when the problem is cleared away but the operator hasn't finished his tea and remembered to switch it off(The French manage 82 on motorways but slower speeds for lorries and/or if it is raining or foggy).
All limits totally disregarding road conditions. It's no wonder that many people disregard the absurd limits and then, of course, are rather inclined to ignore the sensible ones.
It's a shame that most of the signs that gave a smiley electronic face when you were going at 19mph and a frowny face when doing 37mph have gone because I always wanted to see what they did when you went at 83mph!0
