Talk Talk Broadband Speed Claims

I was looking around and comparing broadband deals when Talk Talk rang me after I checked their site.

We live in a rural village some distance from the exchange and it hasn't been upgraded to super fast broadband. We usually get around 2-3MB depending on the time of day. I've looked on the broadband speed map here:

and people in our village have recorded speeds between 1-3MB, including Talk Talk users.

I've also had literature from Durham Council that explains that our exchange is not on any plans for upgrading so they were trying to get some extra funding to pay towards upgrading it. I filled in a survey for them.

The lady from Talk Talk claimed that they have their own technology in the exchange. They would put a new line in for me and I would definitely get at least 8MB download speed.

I was just curious if this was true? I didn't think I would get any faster than 2-3MB with anyone until our exchange is upgraded, so I'm somewhat sceptical of the sales lady!

Check their small print - it will be 'up to....' Not that you will get a sniff at 8Mb, even if 4am and nobody else is online.

She said it was usually £50 to put a new line in but they would waive that if I took the line rental, calls and broadband package.

I presume they called you because you entered your actual phone number on TT's website, what speed did the website predict ?, the website not being on any sort of sell or be sacked type performance management will be more likely to be accurate that the salesperson on commission

The website couldn't give me an estimated speed as they say I need a new phone line.

Whay exchange, and who is your current supplier?
The fact that they want to put in a new line indicates a potential LLU to LLU transfer issue, which is at odds with the fact that you indicate that there are no LLU providers on your exchange?
If TT are offering you a non-LLU connection, that normally carries a hefty surcharge (£around £15) over the normal Essentials price, so beware.
As above, you were offered up to 8Mbps, which can quite legitimately be 0.256Mbps.

I'm with Sky for both phone and broadband and the exchange we're connected to is Birtley.

You are already on a Sky LLU ADSL service, so TT can't switch you direct to their own LLU service. LLU to LLU transfers are rarely possible, you have to do a return to donor to BT first. That's why TT offered to put in a new line instead-not because it's any faster.
Looks like you will have to wait until next year if you want FTTC.
Your only other LLU option is (was) O2. I'd cut a retention deal with Sky and stay put, you can upgrade to FTTC with Sky when it becomes available.

You don't HAVE to do a RTD. You can take a new line and number from Talk Talk.
