Good morning everyone to all of us who are Mums and to those who like me still miss their Mums I hope today is a day of happiness and reflection of your memories.
I was lucky that I had a great Mum who taught me so much(although I didn't realise it at the time) and because of the things she taught to me as a smal child I have grown up to become the person I am today. Her cooking skills, and ways of streeetching a penny until it almost snaps was a great skill I learned from her.
She also taught me to knit, darn and the best of all to read, before I even started school, and left me with a life-long love of books and education.
My first day at school in 1948 I can remember sitting down and the teacher Mrs Knight saying that we were going to have a lovely time at school and would learn to read and write.
Gobby me put up my hand and said I didn't have to as I could already.:):)I think she was a bit miffed by this and said in that case you can come out to the front and write your full name on the blackboard.
I can remember to this day feeling quite proud of myself as I stood on a stool and carefully wrote in block letters 'Jacqueline Elizabeth Holmes-Bearn' aged five, and my address.I was told to sit down and she would have words with Miss Knott our headmistress. I had to take a note home to Mum who met me from school, I gave it to her, she read it, and marched into school to see the headmistress.
Apparently she was told that it was the teachers job to show the children when they started school how to read and write and she shouldn't have done it as I might get confused.
My feisty tiny little Mum immediately told the headmistress that she(my Mum) had taught all of her children to read and write as soon as they were able to, as her Mother had taught her, and its a lifelong thing that once learned cannot be unlearned.Over the coming years I can remember how she used to get cross about it, and it seemed as almost steam came out of her ears just talking about getting hauled in front of the head.In those days you just didn't argue with teachers as they were considered to be almost paragons of the law.My Mum was a bit like that, a real fighter for what she considered to be right and teaching her children was one of them and no one no matter who would interfere with her rights as a parent.God knows what would have happened today.
She was an amazing lady whom I lost sadly when I was 16 and miss to this day.
So to all Mums good ,bad or indifferent lets just think for a moment about the woman who carried us for 9 months andgave us life, without whom none of us would be here today.
I have both my Dds coming to visit this morning which will be nice and I have baked up a storm yesterday to fill the cake tins. The coffee will be on and perking and it will be great to have both of my babies with me even though they are no longer babies at 45 & 43 they are still to me one of my best achievements in my life apart from my marriage and I am so proud of them both in turning into smashing Mums themselves
Have a great day everyone whatever you are doing
Cheers JackieO xxx

Now the weather men are saying cold and SNOW :snow_laug tomorrow!
Out at Ashford outlet today. DD will ring later. I think Mother's day is a bit too commercial for me these days. I have had lovely cards though!:T
Have a good day.
I was going to say I could live with you too......but then thought it sounded a bit suspect :eek::eek:
Happy Mothering Sunday xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
Behave yourselves!
I'm still in bed, very OS today as we're having lunch at my Mum's. I think we're having turkey but not certain. I've bought her an orchid as an in between present. I'll treat her properly when we go to London next week.
I got sweets, chocs and a scented candle from my boys, and DS2 fashioned a handmade card. A bit of a surprise yesterday when my ex brought DS1 home because he was ill and ex didn't know what to do:mad: He's nearly 15 and has the lingering cough and cold, how hard is it to give him some paracetamol or ibuprofen?
I've not done any jobs this weekend. :rotfl: I cannot be bothered. I bought lots of plastic containers (again) to make my kitchen cupboards more stream lined. I made an apple pie and baked some bread yesterday and it was tidier. My apple pie was a disaster though. I used old apples and there was too much liquid in the pie. I'll stick to crumbles from now on.
Enjoy your day of rest Mums!0 -
jackieo You obviously learnt a lot about being a good mum from her, you always speak so nicely about your children.
I was only seven when my Dad died, losing a parent young is hard. I always have things I wish I could show/tell him.0 -
Happy mothers day!
Been up since 4am, when a young couple decided to have a screaming match outside my house, must have been in a great sleep but couldn't fall over again.
Shin beef in slow cooker for tonight's dinner, will pop to mums and MILs soonish as its snowing here and MILs estate quickly becomes unaccessable if the snow lies.
Oh well, better hit the shower and get organised, have a good day all!RIP Iain

A lovely story Jackie and one that reminds me of my first day at school in the very early 1960s. I too had been taught by my mum to read and write and wasn't having any of the Janet and John and letter shape nonsense. Luckily we had a wonderful headmistress who took me off to her office, sat me next to a bookcase full of treasures and asked me to read to her. When she saw that I really could read, she was happy to leave me there to choose and read my own book, while she went about her headmistress duties. She made me many recommendations of books over the years and we remained friends, and I often visited her, until I was in the last year of senior school when she died.
I thank her for my love of books which has been with me all my life and my mum for her great start in my education. My DD was taught by me to read and write before she was 4 but how things have changed since, because my GDD could type her name on a computer before she could write it!LBM 10/1/12 ~ DFW Start 6/2/12: £82,344 ~ Now Zero:staradmin:starmod::staradmin Debt free 17th April 2015 :staradmin:starmod::staradmin

Morning all,
Up early to cook a roast chicken dinner for us to have after DGD'd party, DH did all the veg. I've only got sos rolls and pizzas to bake and make the sandwiches, slice carrot & cucumber sticks. All the rest of the party food was done y/day.
We have to be at the venue for 11.30 to decorate the dining room, the party is from 12.30 - 2.30. We have hired a hall with bouncy castle, ball pool and loads of soft play things DH and I will set the food out whilst 16 little ones are playing in the hall, I think there will be 26 adults, hope I've done enough food !!
JACKIO, What a great Mum you had, we have done the same with Charlotte (DGD2 who was 4 yesterday) she can do the same with her name, address and phone number. She is on stage 5 with the Biff and Chip books, they're for children aged 6 and do multiplication, adding, divide and subtract with maths. Thankfully nowadays teachers are happy for littlies to be able to read and write.
Right, best get back to making the sos rolls & pizzas.
Hope all Mum's get to see or hear from their children.
A special thought to those who are without their little ones, today can be a sad day for some. x
TTFTM, Ditto here with DGD, she's the only one in playschool who can read and write and has 1 to 1 with a teacher.0
