Is homemade bread REALLY cheaper?

I've got a Tesco own brand cheapie breadmaker which I bought during one of the many extra point/money off promos..it's ~ £38 base price. It's my 3rd breadmaker and it's fine...it produces a good reliable white or wholemeal loaf once a day, it's got a timer, dough cycle and various other less used programs. I use Lidl or tesco white flour at ~68p a bag (currently on 3-4-2 in Tesco) mixed 75:25 with wholemeal for a Best Of Both type loaf, with or without a handful of seeds or oatmeal for extra texture. Costs about 55p for a 700g loaf and there's nothing in the basic loaf but flour, water, yeast, a tablespoonful of sunflower oil and a teaspoon each of sugar and salt.
I rate it anyway. It all gets used, no wastage, it's nicer than shop bread, probably healthier and it's convenient as it's easier to keep dry ingredients in the house than go out to buy bread fresh every day.Val.0 -

Just thought I would put in my pennyworth
I bought a Kenwood BM450 to replace my old one which had broken last year and sadly missed. Yes Kenwood is dearer but as I had the money at the time I invested in it. I did linger over the Panasonic but the Kenwood just pipped the post for me - I love it, I have used all except the jam programmes and have lots of whoopsied apples that will be going into it to make jam - just forgot to buy pectin, but will get it later today. I have to admit the bread is even nicer than out of my cheap machine - it was a Cookworks, it did make good bread but I found it was better with white loaves or fruit and the wholemeal bread always seemed a bit heavy, where as in Kenwood the wholemeal comes out lighter in texture. I do like the 15hr delay as well as I have some health problems and the long delay is good if I know I am going to have to go to bed and can be assured bread will be ready when its needed. I have noticed mine has gone down quite a bit since the summer - I paid £115 and you can get it for £92 now, not sure if that is good or bad, but I love it and as my hob and oven is silver it looks good with them, yes I did consider colour as well, but that would have not mattered if I had felt Panasonic was the one for me, its just the icing on the cake. Oh yes other thing I like is being able to programme it with my own programmes - I have a fruit bread I make to my own recipe and once I found what is the best kneading time, rising and baking time for it I have now got it in my programmes which is so handy, it was this point that really sold the Kenwood to me, you get 5 programmes for you to make your own but just used one so far, but I know will add more, have a cake one I am honing now and when I find the best combination that will be put in.
It basically depends what you want it for, if you just want to make bread as per recipes, and the odd cake then Panasonic is fine, although at moment its dearer than Kenwood and as I like to see how things are going the see through lid and light on the Kenwood was another selling point for me.
http://www.breadmakerreviews.co.uk/ this link give an overview of the the top 5 machines but there are links on the left hand side for plenty of other machines - mine is the Kenwood shown as number 2.
Good luckNeed to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

We are on our second Panasonic and it has saved us a huge amount of money. Plus the bread is nicer and it's more convenient. Ours only cost us £65 just before they introduced the new model - and we'd been quoted £50 for the repair the previous, ancient one needed.
But this is why I'm posting -- our *first* bread machine was acquired by asking all our friends if anyone had a bm they didn't use. And someone did. They're near the top of the list of things that people own and don't use, so you can help someone declutter and save yourself some pennies. We weren't sure if we'd use it or not, and it's a lot to spend if you aren't sure.Make £2023 in 2023: (all decluttering), current total £2860 me, £330 for friends & family, £468 charity donations.0 -

I have had Bread machine for ages. I would definitely replace if it broke with the Panasonic model where you can easily integrate fruit and nuts into the machine.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.
