Electricity bicycles

Could a Racing Bicycle or Mountain Bike be custom fitted with a aftermarket front fork/electric hub (say 1000watt) with unrestricted speed and be legal?
Jaffa Cake, I would like to see a link to the web site where you intend to purchase the e-bike/scooter from. As I am still sure that this would not pass as an EPAC here in the UK or even on main land Europe.
The tyre quoted in the specification you translated is hard to get hold of in the UK. The widest I have seen is 16x2.125" which is for a kids bike and the widest adult is 16x2.0".
If you want a bike that is approved for use in the EU then look for the standards number EN13444. Although many things are popular in Asia it does not mean that it is safe or conforms to our regulations here in the EU. For example the charger would be acceptable say in China, but here it could cause radio interference and block some ones TV/radio signal.0 -
Technically yes these can be fitted. And NO this would not be road legal. Just in terms of power the motor can only be 200W (UK) / 250W (Most of the rest of the EU) although a 250W motor can be used in the UK. Electrical assistance can only go up to 15mph (UK) 25km/h (EU about 15.5mph) at that point the power must cut out.

I've seem them fitted (online) just wondered if a 1000w front hub mountain bike would be legal if it was registered, plates, insurance, moped crash hat, etc eg paying out each year for it like it was a moped/motorbike as such. I'd think not, but if it was a £100 a year or something i'd probably give it a go..
JC.... Is it just for yourself, or are you thinking of going into a business venture ? the messages just seemed a little mixed to me. Hope it goes well anyway. I personally would love to see the laws relaxed a fair bit in the uk.0 -

I understand that a tax disc must be applied for, even though it is gratis.
For myself and one for her initially, so just buying two.
So at this point, not looking into a business of import and selling.
Then see how they perform, and continue with the investigation in to the real options of using one legally on UK roads.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that I live in China with my Chinese wife, and have done for nearly 4 years.
With this in mind, her can buy the pictured bike in my earlier posts, and a good price.
However, for now, we will buy just two, and use them for a month so they are used, and "not new" and they will be our own personal bikes.

Hi JC - so you're living in China at the moment to use for work and back mostly (in China)?0

The Chines eBikes can be made to CE regulations or not, there is a small price difference.0

Hi Motch,
We, currently live in China.
I have one here, but its about 5 years old, worth about £30, and not worth bringing back with us to UK.
So I was going to buy us a new one each before we left.

wouldn't look that good when a grandma rides past you with the slightest of tailwinds.
I think electric bikes are quite good for the disabled and those with mobility problems.
I think my mates Solex folding bike is brilliant, and much better street cred than a mobility scooter.Child of a Fighting Race.0 -

Yes indeed, very handy for the disabled and mobility problems.
I'm assuming J.C is healthy/and non-disabled with no mobility problems as travelling around 15 miles each day to work and back.
So if I was a fit/healty young guy riding a 15mph electric scooter to work and back and was passed by some old dears/boys on shoppers i'd feel a bit silly.
It was just the link you gave was for an electric scooter that's limited to 15mph and weights around 10 stone. If the battery went or electrical problems etc in our often wet weather would make it a nightmare to get it home if disabled/mobility problems.0
