I have always found Tiffany very helpful, but they only seem to be interested in stuff bought in their own country.

I have had alterations made on new stuff here that their customer service has been excellent with. When I tried to change something in Bond St that had been bought in New York, they refused to help - even with a receipt and them selling the same item here. Then again when it eventually got back to New York, they were helpful there, even though it was months since the last visit.

To add generally, claws are easy to snap or move making the stones easy to dislodge. I've had my engagement ring reset with a rubbed over setting because the claws always caught material on them.

My platinum engagement ring has 3 stones all set with claws. I've had it 10 years and have lost one of the side diamonds twice. Luckily i didnt lose the stones (certified, very clear). The jeweller that made it repaired them for free. The second time they actually remade the whole setting to ensure each stone was secure.

As I said before, I only ever wore my rings when out of the house (don't even do that now) and never ever to bed. Some settings are just easier to misshape/stretch.

I've worn my platinum solitaire day in, day out for many years: In bed, in the shower, in the kitchen and I haven't had any trouble with it. I've always understood platinum to be the most durable metal for jewellery. To be honest, I don't think much of Tiffany's advice to you.

If I'd got something from somewhere like Tiffany's, I'd expect it to last a lot longer than that! My rings cost an absolute pittance and I've worn them every single day, shower, bed, even bl**dy horse riding. I thought it was one of those things that were meant to stay on all the time. I don't know they're there anymore and I probably couldn't get them off :D

It's not being under a cotton sheet and a duvet thats the problem, it's when you lay on your hand !

I definately wouldn't wear a Tiffany ring in bed !

...When you lay on your hand...and "crush" the ring between your fleshy body and the squishy mattress? I think most people would expect the ring to survive in that situation...

Interesting thread, though. My wife's had her Tiffany engagement ring for 2 and a half years now and wears it all the time - it's overdue a service actually, but it still looks fine to the naked eye...must remember to keep a more active eye on the thing.

(FWIW, her Tiffany wedding ring is still pretty round, too - and that's got to be about the narrowest ring they do, it's tiny...)

Depends on the materials used etc though. 9 carat gold (for example) is harder and more durable than 24 carat. The more pure the gold is, the softer it is.

I've had a 21 carat ring go out of shape without someone putting their full body weight on it, just by grabbing my hand and squeezing. Yet my 9 carat ring I've had since I was little (had it resized) has been through loads of stress and isnt misshapen etc.

I keep my wedding ring on in bed but take my engagement ring off. Both are 9ct gold and both are still perfect circles.

Mind you, the pattern in the gold has worn off a bit on my wedding ring as I've been wearing it for so long (26 years).

Platinum isn't particularly strong. The heat of wearing in bed can make it deform.

I'm sorry but the lowest temperature at which platinum will anneal (soften enough to become pliable) is 1000 degrees C, now I don't know what tog rating your duvet is, but there's not much chance of your finger reaching that temperature overnight!

Platinum is a strong, durable metal, however it can be put out of shape by knocks, flaws in the metal/manufacture, damage etc. Be aware though that as you purchased abroad, your ring would not have come under the strict assay tests that jewellery in the UK undergoes. Have you had it independetly assayed? Are you sure of its quality?

See what Tiffany has to say about the ring before you make any further decisions.

I wore a gold ring to bed once, and with the heat warming the ring and me lying on it i manged to squash it and had to have it cut off my finger.

this though was a dress ring with a very thin band on the underside.
