So one of those £25 sky cards is a waste of money? MIL has one.

Ok, until Sky catch up with the illegal cards. They do have fraudulent use department who go after people like your MIL.
Sky can see what you are watching and compare to what they are being paid.
This is because you have a internet connection to the Sky box.
Don't forget Sky can turn off your Sky box remotely and you will have nothing,The more I live, the more I learn.

The £25 FreesatfromSky card is not illegal and is provided directly by Sky.
However, anyone cancelling a Sky subscription does not need to pay an additional fee to Sky because the viewing card in the decoder will also operate as a Freesat From Sky card and provide the same channels.
Only ex-Sky customers who have cancelled prior to Sky swapping to new cards need to pay anything extra at all.0 -

I think the card allows you to record
In order to record anything via a Sky+ decoder, you have to pay Sky a subscription of £10 a month if their TV service is cancelled.
The cancelled viewing card just allows viewing of all the Free To Air Channels and has no other functionality. A FreesatfromSky card is similarly limited and is only required when Sky routinely change their cards. As another pointed out, even without any card at all many channels can still be viewed.0 -

No it does not, you don't need a card for Free To Air (FTA) channels at all. A card will give you the six or so additional Free to View (FTV) channels plus the regional versions of BBC, ITV etc on channels 101 to 105, based on the postcode the card was issued to. However some boxes retain these regional channel anyway.0 -

I clearly said "I think that ...", so whether or not that was correct, your "nonsense" reply is a bit belligerent.
And, if you were to look back, you would see that it was me who said that you can view channels without a card (in post #3); indeed I have a Sky box with no card in it with which I can view free to air channels.0 -
OP, in summary, if you want to watch Freeview, you'll need to fix the aerial cable. If you are happy with Freesat from Sky, without any PVR facilities or access to existing recordings, you need to do nothing but cancel your Sky sub. Either way, the channel line up is similar.
If you want PVR facilities, get a Humax Freesat PVR, which is a straight box swap, using your existing dish and LNB.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If you keep the Sky box and cancel your subscription you may find it frustrating having all the pay-to-view channels cluttering up the EPG.
Personally I'd fix the aerial cable or get a Freesat PVR.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
