Today I finally received a response.... nearly a month after I sent the letter.
Very snotty letter from customer services stating they had closed my account and I should cut up my card and would be charged heavily if any payments were attempted on my account.
No appology for the way I was treated, or the dodgy advice about perfoming online banking in a cyber cafe, not even a sorry your leaving us, so that's £57 worth of experience.
On the upside I wrote a letter to barclays about the £9.50 Additons fee they have been charging on my wifes current account since she informed them she was shifting her main banking and no longer required the overdraft facility it affords her in November last year (she still has a couple of DD's which we have not got round to shifting over). Today we received a personal telephone call appologising for the inconvienence and offering us a full refund £66.50 :T - so i suppose im £9.50 up !!
And the next time i'm looking for a financial product barclays are a darn site more likely to get my custom than MBNA !!!
Would it be inappropriate of me to start an MBNA hate campaign

I without fail make a payment as soon as the B/T shows on the account with any of my cards, the trap you fell into is one they want you to. A few years ago I made a mistake with my Lloyds card and they stung me but I got them to refund me. If it had been me in your case I would have told them that I didn't receive a statement so didn't know when to pay by. I recently had a similar thing with Egg 0% 5 months anniversary, I set up a minimum payment on their w/site, for some reason the payment wasn't made but I'd already made a payment as I said, and Egg said it was their fault but they could easily have denied responsibility.0

Doodle, you've kind of highlighted my point, you site 2 cases where the cc company's have chaned their arm, but with a bit of a gentle nudge, you get your money back. These guys just were not interested in having a civil conversation about maintaining my custom.
Having looked around this site it seems I'm not the only one who thinks MBNA customer services are evil tyrants !! - If they continue they will get the same reputation as NTL and maybee we should set up an MBNAHell website in the same vein as http://www.ntlhell.co.uk/

Tricky one. I certainly see where you are coming from, but one could also interpret their actions as being a rigorous enforcement of their Terms and Conditions rather than being evil tryants. I guess I am just playing devil's advocate (quite literally possibly !)

Arrrrghh
Having told them to stuff it and paid off the balance in full, it seems I have somehow damaged my credit rating.
I have just applied for a new Natwest Credit Card, of whom I have been a customer of various loans and bank accounts for over 15 years, and requested a couple of BT's totalling about £5,500, my sallary is well within the 40% bracket and other than this one mistake I haven't had any adverse credit history since I was a student in the nineties. Despite all of this Natwest have only offered me a £3,000 credit limit.
Would me paying off and cancelling my account 1 month after I oppened it (with a late payment in between) look to possible lenders like I had been forced to close the account ?
Is there anything I can do to repair the damage ?
I am really beginning to wish I had never heard of MBNA now !!! :mad:0 -
Hi I,
You may be seeing things that aren't there.
What I mean is, if you have a look at some of the other threads in this forum you will see that NatWest seem to be gaining a bit of a reputation for offering low credit limits. Just a thought.«««¤ Richie ¤»»»0 -
Richie.
Thanks mate !! Was about to really throw toys out of the Pram, I will ring Natwest and see if I can negotiate a better limit, & I'll look round for some better deals elsewhere at least it's 0% on purchases so It's not all bad.0
