Stoozing mistake - MBNA heavy charges.

Just manage to accidentally fail to pay my MBNA card on time, set the payment up through internet banking but mistakenly set payment for May instead of April. Contacted MBNA as by the time I noticed and corrected it the payment would be a day late, MBNA's response was the following
1. Withdraw 0% retrospectively from 1st April
2. Charge late fee £25
3. Interest in excess of £150 (about 12K outstanding)
I have now paid off all but the interest and late fee and am trying to get them to drop them but currently they seem to be sticking to their guns even to the point of saying they are happy for me to cancel the card.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
This is my first ever mistake whilst stoozing in 2 and a half years and it looks like a painful one.

I do not think you have paid off all of the interest. It could be that you have paid £150 off the £12,000?Don't waste your words I don't need,
Anything from you.
I don't care where you've been or,
What you plan to do.0 -

I think OP means that he has repaid the full amount on the card, apart from the interest and late charge - which he is challenging.
To OP: OUCH..... :eek:I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I think under the circumstances I would ask them again if they will waive the interest and fee, probably best in writing.
If they will not budge there is little to be done except put it down to experience, look at the fact that you are probably still ahead of the game if you've been at this for two years and move on.0 -
Yes, the same thing happened with us, we compensated by getting loads more cards we probably wouldn't have had otherwise!
Put it down to experience...I'm married now! Yippee!0 -
..is it right that interest was backdated? ie that the 0% offer was withdrawn from before your mistake?0

I think they can only go back to the start of the current statement period in general......under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -
bummer! its definatley worth a stinging letter or two,if you end up having to pay up you might as well give them a bit of stick, find out who the MD is and write directly to him!0

Incidentally, the credit card 'late payment penalty' is not actually legally enforcable under British law.
See this link:

I have just written to HFC Bank regarding late payment fees and quoting the fact that the penalties are not enforcable, and they refunded the whole lot, backdated to June 2004.
It might be worth a try.0 -
Give them a bit of stick......who has actually made a mistake here?
MBNA have done nothing wrong.
The Ts and Cs will certainly say they can do this - you got it wrong so don't expect MBNA to roll out a red carpet and back down. If they do, then you're lucky.

Your are correct MBNA did not do anything wrong all I was trying to make them see was that it was a genuine mistake and asked if they would reconsider (Which they wont). I have still made a considerable amount out of them as I have had somewhere in the region of 2 years 0%.
I have now paid it all off and will await the next offer but I am a happy bunny as Arsenal have just won 3-0...0
