I don't think I owe them any money, I have renewed my current contract with them and I don't think I would've been able to if I did owe them such an amount.
I would also point out surely if it was in default they would not have allowed a renewal untill the outstanding amount was cleared.
Do it by recorded mail so that you can prove you tried to sort it out before taking it furtherIt's not just about the money0 -

Old contract don't 'expire' unless you upgrade them or cancel giving 30 days notice. All that ends is the minimum term. Did you maybe take out a new contract (with the same provider) without cancelling the old one?
You need to get basic info on dates etc, otherwise no one can help you. How many months missed payments does £225 represent on your old contract? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
It's like drawing teeth!
Did you at any time within the last 4 years get a new phone on T-mobile with a new mobile number to replace a previous T-mobile contract? Upgrades keep the same number, so that isn't in the frame.
But if you took out a new contract without cancelling the old one, it would roll on and explain why you have a debt showing.0
