Halifax were happy to provide information without account numbers.
But I did provide them with name, address, previous address and date of birth. I am surprised that Black Horse and AMEX won't provide the information to you with out the account numbers. Have you tried asking if there is any other way?0 -
Having a think with subject access request they have to provide any information related to you. So really they should provide it to you if you just give them name, address and DOB. They should then provide any information about you they have on file including account numbers.0

extract from the Black Horse letter:
Once we are in receipt of a valid agreement number we would be able to locate your
account details and will send the information that you have requested. If you are unable
to provide us with an agreement number at this time, we will be unable to assist you any
further with this request.
and from the AMEX one:
Regrettably, we cannot compile this information as you have supplied insufficient
information to enable us to locate your details. In order to deal with your request we would
require the following information:
Membership/Account Number
AND Any further previous addresses which we would hold on file for you.
I had originally supplied all previous addresses and DOBs. It's a bit frustrating really.0 -
It seems very odd that they can't find your details, I'm wondering is it a case of the don't want to give you the details?
I'm sure I remember something about credit agreements being invalid or something if they could produce the original paper work.
Are these accounts credit cards/loan agreements?
Have you put in Subject Access Request in already, or are you just being told that you need the agreement number by an advisor over email/letter?
You should ask for details of their Data Controller, if you haven't already.0 -

I would question how true it is that they need your sort code and account number. I'm sorry, but there just HAS to be lots of people who ring up or write in without this information. There must be a way to find the account through other means. I've never seen a database that only lets you search for data in one way.
The ICO says any company is entitled to request as much information as they need to satisfy themselves as to your identity. Date of birth and address (if they match the ones on file) seem like enough to me!What will your verse be?

Thanks for the v useful comments folks, especially matttye's comments about the amount of information they can request.
I think I'll reply and challenge their request for further information and see what happens.0 -

Of course, there is a slight difference in what they're saying, as they are not saying that they're not satisfied as to your identity but that they can't find your account, so they're not really falling foul of the ICO's guidance on SARs.
I would still recommend you write back and put the point across that there must be some way of of being able to find out about the account if the sort code and account number are lost. What will your verse be?
