Right to Bank Account Number from Closed Account?

Do I have the right to the bank account numbers from closed accounts?

I ask because I have a Paypal account which is asking for my account number as part of the security questions (this is legit before anyone asks). The problem is the account was closed I didn't have the details. I should have updated my Paypal account and removed it but I didn't. At the time I just created a new Paypal account because that seemed my only option.

Move on a few years later. I signed up to a website tracker/survey site which pays into Paypal. When I first registered I used main email address (the one for my old Paypal account), I didn't realise that this one was the one they would send the Paypal payment to. Before the first payment went in I asked them to change it to my hotmail one. But they didn't and still haven't, they have been sending payments to my old Paypal account.

I went to Halifax to see if I could get my old account number - I was told no because they had changed their system and old accounts were no longer on the new system. I was told to fill a form on the BBA website for dormant accounts. I filled in the form and added a note which said it wasn't dormant but closed.

Today I received a message from BBA that Halifax can find no dormant accounts.

So what do I do now? Is it possible for me to get my account number from Halifax?

Can you not log on to your old Paypal account and see what account number you have registered there? If the account is closed no money will be going into it anyway, Halifax will just be putting it into a suspense account.

Amd can you confirm how many years is 'a few'? There may be a limit to how far back Halifax could go to find closed accounts.

So you have been to Halifax and also BBA and they say can't get them anymore.
Then ask is it possible to get number from Halifax....
They have said No. Seems pretty clear to me.

Perhaps contact paypal and see if you get another way to get through security.
Or find a old statement you may have kept.

No old statements. Nothing, narda in that respect.

Account was closed about 4 years ago. Halifax say I'm coming up on their system - but just not the account details. The woman said they still have my details but just on some sort of archived system.

I can't login into Paypal to get the account number - when I login it asks me for the account number as part of their security. This is the problem, I need the account number to get past the security to get the money. At the moment money is going into the Paypal account but I can't access it.

The payments are being sent to my Paypal account not my Halifax account. The Halifax account is the account connected to my Paypal account.

Paypal say there is no other way - I have to provide the account number.

I'm not sure if it is a case that Halifiax can't find my accounts or the case they can't find any dormant accounts. The email said they couldn't find any dormant ones - well of course they can't, it's not dormant it's a closed account. I told Halifax and BBA that it wasn't dormant.

So it looks like a case of we have your details on our old system but were not going to give them to you.

To add - Halifax changed systems about 2 years ago and this is when closed accounts were archived.

My husband has just informed me that Halifax have to keep details for 7 years. So looks like I'm gonna have to get back to them again.

You'll need to make a Subject Access Request for any information relating to you, they can charge for it but maximum cost is £10.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I'm sorry, I am not going to ask, I am going to state that this does not seem legitimate to me!

I have been with Paypal for many years and I have never known them to ask for your bank account details in order to login to Paypal.

You may be asked for the account number if you are requesting a password change (just to verify it is you requesting such a change) but never to login to paypal.

No, only the last 4 digits of an account number are displayed for security reasons.
