Depends on your driving style and traffic conditions.

My 2L diesel does anywhere between 26MPG and 60+ MPG.

Newer engines get more fuel efficient but the cars also get heavier so the MPG suffers.

So you want the newest most fuel efficient engine, In the lightest car going.

Also, What do you drive now and what MPG do you get?

Now if citykid did the same journeys as me he/she would probably struggle to get 50mpg.

I currently drive in London so im pottering about looking for high mpg prob diff in city im driving a fiesta zetec 1.25 bought for £1250 5 years ago prob get 30mpg out of it better on long journeys.

This off another post really impressed me with low tax etc..........

    Clio 1.5 dci
    C3 1.4 hdi
    C2 1.4 hdi
    fiesta 1.4 tdci
    206 1.4 hdi

all of the above can generally be gotten for around 2k, in a 51 -53 plate, do (offical) MPG of around 65 mpg, cost £30 a year to tax and are low insurance groups (5 or lower in general) however to get it within the 2k price tag you will have to be looking around 100,000 miles give or take 20k miles as there are so many differences in asking price because they are somewhat in demand at the moment

Not sure about MPG, but in almost every other respect, one of the worst cars in history (which is why they are cheap, and probably therefore appealed to you).

I have to say that at 6,000m per year, MPG would be towards the bottom of my list when car shopping...
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!
