Hi
I need peoples help and experiances, looking for a car for under 2k, ideally around the 1k mark that will do huge MPG, as my family is losing a company car at the end of the month and all i need a car for is to chug to work and back (70miles)
So far I am considering:-
peugeot 106 1.5td cost under 1k 50mpg+
smart fortwo cost just under 2k ?????
If you have a suggestion and a rough mpg/cost to buy i would be really greatful.
Thanks
Nick

We have the 106 1.5d.
They don't do a td.
We bought it on 95K miles, and in three and a half years it's up to 140K.
It gives 55 to the gallon, cost less than £500, and had cost nothing since other than the usual brakes tyres cam belt etc.0 -
Look for a Peugeot 405 diesel.
It should cost you a few hundred pounds. It will do 50+ mpg and be a decent drive. If it breaks down throw it away. I had one that got to 245k miles until I traded it in 18 months ago. A thoroughly decent cheap car.0 -
Pug 205d. nasty little cars but very cheap.0

As said, any old French diesel seems to be good to go. If you want 'reliable till the end of the world', go for one without a Turbo, as this appears to be the weakest point on the old diesels, it will be distressingly slow though0

Clio 1.5 dci 86, ours never gave less than 60mpg and often over 70.
But at £1-2k, some compromise over mileage or condition is likely??I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

i have been looking into this myself and the cars i have found are
Clio 1.5 dci
C3 1.4 hdi
C2 1.4 hdi
fiesta 1.4 tdci
206 1.4 hdi
all of the above can generally be gotten for around 2k, in a 51 -53 plate, do (offical) MPG of around 65 mpg, cost £30 a year to tax and are low insurance groups (5 or lower in general) however to get it within the 2k price tag you will have to be looking around 100,000 miles give or take 20k miles as there are so many differences in asking price because they are somewhat in demand at the momentDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
106/Saxo is a great little car, best buy in this budget IMO, try to get power steering though cos it's heavier than you'd think without it.
Cheap parts from your local motor factor too.
Do check the rear brakes over if you get one, many seem to be neglected, out of sight out of mind?, new wheel cylinders and brake shoes will only cost about £50 the lot if you need them....take one side apart at a time only, getting the springs etc in the correct place without a pattern isn't as easy as you might think, mind you that goes for most drums set ups.0 -

For that mileage you want to go bigger, something designed to soak up those miles. A small car is gonna start falling apart and costing money....
Owned by single mums, boy racers (marked by distasteful spoliers/wheels/etc) or old folk, they'll also be less likely to have had a proper service and/or anywhere near decent tyre's fitted.
A diesel is a bad idea, I would never buy a Diesel that wasn't brand new. They get costly in their age.
For the money a newer petrol Mondeo/Vectra sized car is going to return 38-45mpg on longer mileage if the journey isn't stop/start.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

406 HDI... 90BHp so it wont have the DMF and not a sniff of DPF in sight... Will easily hit 55mpg maybe more on a run.
£2k will easily get the GTX or Executive model with toys and comfort...
Simple to fix & service.0 -
Loads of choice then, but have to add I've never found that diesels get expensive with age, and at 1K, what's to lose???;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
