Diesels get expensive with age? Imho cant be further from truth.
Older spark ignition engines have all sorts of coil and spark relates issues. This is not true accross the board but diesels dont have this issue.
I've had 4 diesels and 4 petrols. In terms of engine only: diesels never caused an issue.
As mentioned before if u want absolutely no hassle dont get turbo i.e.: polo sdi, 205d, 106d...not sure what bigger non turbo diesels there are.0 -
Thats to all those that have replied, I am going to start the hunt at the end of the month, top of the list is the 106 1.5d, with 80k - 100k, this way I can espect it to go wrong, but having been a mechanic many moons ago I should be able to fix it. Also at £500 for a replacement, it cant cost that much to fix even the most dramtic of failiures. I do like the idea of a bigger car, but as it is just me chugging to and from work on country back roads a little cheap roller skate will suite me fine. Thanks to everyone for their help, and sharing your expiriences.!Debt Free Wanna Be

i have been looking into this myself and the cars i have found are
Clio 1.5 dci
C3 1.4 hdi
C2 1.4 hdi
fiesta 1.4 tdci
206 1.4 hdi
all of the above can generally be gotten for around 2k, in a 51 -53 plate, do (offical) MPG of around 65 mpg, cost £30 a year to tax and are low insurance groups (5 or lower in general) however to get it within the 2k price tag you will have to be looking around 100,000 miles give or take 20k miles as there are so many differences in asking price because they are somewhat in demand at the moment
Good luckI'm also trying to find similar cars to above. Been looking for over a year now - the problem I'm finding is there's not a lot of "good" ones about.
I think people will hold onto the good ones and you only get the dustbins for sale. I went to look at a fiesta tdci a few months ago, even though it had low milage, it was missing about 3/4 years of service history.
Started looking for a yaris 1.0 petrol - the closest to me is over an hours drive away!
I do like the idea of a 406 Executive though0
