There are a number of printed prayer/poem type things , one I really like is called 'Footprints' there is another which is probably more suited to new parents called 'Children learn what they live' (or words to that effect!). These can be mounted and put in clip frames.

These can be found in card shops and book shops and the like.

For the less religious but to mark the occasion what about a nice pen?

When I got confirmed at the age of uhmmm13-14??? Goodness so long ago :)
I got mainly money, but my grandparents gave me a white psalm book with a tiny crochet'ed cross bookmark. I later framed the book mark but the little book with my initials and such is hidden away in a box. I was never very religious and later found myself on the pagan path so I'm glad no-one bought me anything too religious and the little book mark I value for it's beautiful craftmanship!
I would say a set of books like the Narnia series would be great! I love those books and loved living in them throughout my childhood :)

Why don't you get him a gift voucher for your local christian book shop - that way he can choose something that will apeal to him on his christian journey - my personal opinion is that some of the tings that are marketed as 'confirmation gifts', often belong in the 1980's - hardly suitable for a young lad to mark this step of faith that he is about to take.

my daughter is making her first holy communion soon, she is 8. i am looking for a gift for her. something special but not a cuddly toy, book or ornament. Not quite sure what to get. May have to get a necklace for her to wear on the day but any other suggestions would be great.

Mancunian-lady and Rikki too!! How about a pocket or fob watch?

We did this for my partners' son's 21st and it's great to see it come out on special family occasions. It looks brilliant against a smart suit with the chain showing against a waist coat and it's something they can keep.

Most good jewellers have them and they vary in price so you can spend according to your wealth!! and if you like they can be engraved.
Expect the worst, hope for the best, and take what comes!!:o

How about buying him a book about the saint he has chosen for his confirmation name?
Confirmation cards can be bought in your local catholic church shop. If you don't regularly go, pop in and get a newsletter with the church mass times on it, the shop is usually open for about 20 mins after the high mass has finished.
Alternatively, I think Card Factory sell them...

Most religious gifts get put in a drawer or top shelf never to be seen again. Most family and friends I know will give a nice card with some money so the child can purchase something of more value that they will actually use. Friends of mine are pulling their money contributions together to buy a camera for my daughter.
