What to give as confirmation gift? (boy)

Hi everyone,

My nephew (7 years old) is being confirmed in the next couple of weeks into the Catholic faith and I don't know what to give him as a gift. I'm not a religious person myself, but I do believe in giving the right gift on a special occasion. I think I gave his sister some earrings or jewellery of some sort, but that's not appropriate for him and I don't want to give him a toy, I want something that he can keep to remind him of the day.

Does anyone have any ideas - I don't want to spend a lot (about £10).

Thanks in anticipation!

A St Christopher? You can get them on silver keyrings from some jewellers if you don't want to give a pendant.

My nephew (8) was recently christened and my gift was a wooden angel standing with a boy in her arms. I bought it from a christian bookshop and it was about ten pounds, I think. He also received a couple of child-friendly religious books, a china dove, money towards something that HE wanted to buy and a commemoration plate.
  • Thanks for all your suggestions - I will bear them in mind when surfing the internet and when I eventually get to the shops.

A word of warning - try to make sure you aren't duplicating other gifts. Often the kids get three crosses, two bibles etc. Someone suggested to me if the child is a reader to get a nice edition of the Narnia books, which I thought was a good religious-related but not obvious suggestion. Where I come from though it's much more common to give money, even for very close family.

Slightly OT I know (and showing my ignorance, I know...), but I always thought you had to be older than that to be confirmed...I thought the idea was that you got christened as a baby, then confirmed at 16ish when you were old enough to decide for yourself?

If not, what's the point of a confirmation?
