i get as many free samples from companies for my cat i used to work for a pet wholesale now knwo as vital pets the public used to be able to have an account with no charge and just walk in and order, best pets is good, but my cat eats anything and everything, if we drop food when we're cooking hes there like a dog, he eats everything from peanuts, veg, curry, we top up his food with meat, egg, fish what ever we are eating he jumps up at the table and wants it so any left overs he has, we got him when he was 6 months old he hadnt been fed properly and is constantly eating.

A 12.5 kg bag of supreme dried food for my dog costs £30' it lasts two months or more and works out at around 50p a day

You can buy cheaper, a lot cheaper

But when pricing up, you need to work out the price per day as different foods have different feeding amounts
  • I've changed my dog's food to Stephenson budget working dog food that I get from my local feed store, its a 15kg bag for £8.80. My dog's not fussy about what he eats but if the oil content is high it dosen't agree with him.

I get my dog and cat food (dried) from eBay my maddog is the seller. I am not associated wi them at all. They have different types and my cats and dogs are happy enough on it. I have young children so whatever they don't eat also gets put into dogs bowls. Have noticed that the cats seem to eat the dogs food, when they think I'm not looking!!! Oh, I buy it in 20kg bags.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

I get my cat food from Approved Foods online. At the moment 4 pouches are £1.49, but they often have special offers. Last year I bought 160 pouches at 19p each!

Mr Asd* has 17kg bags of Wagg Complete Worker Beef & Veg for £9. (I know several people who feed this to their dogs.) Check online for more info. Buying dog food labelled as being for working dogs doesn't have the 20% vat added to the price so saves money. Unfortunately no-one appears to sell working cat food!

We only have dogs but we get bags of dry food from straight from the manufacturer, they require large orders so most of the family use the same food, we get a musli food with added oils even looking at it you can tell it's very rich and our dogs have done great on it and are very healthy yet it only costs us £10 for a 20kg bag (a year ago it was £8 tho).We use about a bag every 6 weeks.

Our dogs also get the odd leftover but we try not to have leftovers here.

One word of warning for cats is that they need a basic taurine intake every day - if they don't get it, they can go blind. Therefore it's always safest to feed a complete food, which has this added. More info here:

You don't say what sort of dog, or what type of food he/she eats (ie wet or dry or a mixture) but I can offer this info:

My DH's friend always fed his Black Lab on a working dog dry food; as it was for working dogs, it was cheaper VAT-wise, I'm told.

For little dogs that need pouches of wet food, Ald! have some very good stuff called Earls which comes in boxes of 8 x 150g pouches; I'm a dog-sitter, and one of my recent guests didn't bring enough food for her stay; I got her some of this stuff, and she loved it. This was about three weeks ago, I paid £1.99 for a box of 8 pouches, which worked out 25p per meal.
