    what operating system?

    which browser are you using?

how many processes do you have running?

have you downloaded, installed and updated and run a scan with malwarebytes
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

which antivirus do you have installed.

it sounds like you have to many processes running for the computer to keep up. hence the program is not responding..

Have you or anyone recently installed anything when this started to show?

As well as running Malwarebytes, I'd also download and run StartUpLite (made by the same people as malwareBytes).

This will clear out anything unecessary from startup and should help.

You can uninstall the Ask toolbar using add/remove programs.
If you go to Google.co.uk (for example), you can set that as your homepage (instruction differ on your browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox/Google Chrome/etc).

    Web Browser

Firefox, Internet Explorer, Sarfari, and many others.

    1. download malwarebytes and run, fix anything.
    2. open task manager, at the bottom left it will tell you how many processes are running, personally I prefer Process Hacker, it give more information.

after a bit of googling. I see its a 2006 model. and that it came with 512mb of memory, and windows xp media centre

How much memory do you have ?

if i'm correct a decent amount of processes should be around 23-30 processes when i had xp pro i had mine down to 23 processes
the more processes the slower the machine.

You didnt mention which antivirus your using, Avast, AVG, norton, kaspersky, MCafee, this could also be causing the slowdown especially if its running a scan at the same time your using it.

I'm going to assume your on a 32bit OS so I would also download and run Hijackthis and post the log file here. so we can tell you what you can close down, remove, what could be at fault.

I would suggest you download an online antivirus scanner and run a scan using that. it might pick up something that yours doesnt.
heres the top 3 I can recommend.
Cureit by Dr web, freeware http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en

Kaspersky portable / freeware , http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/avptool11/ choose the one with the newest date.
Eset online scan. http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner-popup/ if you use IE >Internet Explorer otherwise use this link
for alternate browsers use this link http://download.eset.com/special/eos...taller_enu.exe

you could use all 3 if you wanted to.
after running hijackthis. run 1 of the above.

I still dont have the same toolbar showing Tools etc.
The menu bar? The precise method varies - hence the questions - but in Internet Explorer 9 you can reveal it temporarily by pressing the [Alt] key on the left-hand side of your keyboard.

Post me a DDS log - should take 2-3 minutes. It makes no registry writes or changes and creates no permanent files or folders.

Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click DDS to run it.
    • When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)

How much RAM are you running on your setup?

No, that's good. Now post the contents of attach.txt exactly the same way.

You have a lot of junkware running around in there that'll not be helping matters.

    That looks too complicated
You don't have to understand it, but I do. ;)

Your limited resources (RAM - 512MB), are being taken up by junkware & you've unecessary Toolbars & BHO's having an impact on Internet Explorer too - which is why you're seeing the "not responding" messages.

Support.com/ASK, AddLyrics, Smiley Bar for Facebook, Delta search, Yontoo, BrowserProtect, IB Updater to name but a few.

Post the contents of attach.txt as above and from there we can tell you what to uninstall (via add/remove programs) and then direct you to a simple tool that'll get rid of the rest - It's easier than you think.

And then bump your RAM up to at least 1GB.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
