I left O2 a couple of months ago after 15 years due to their pricing. I now have a Nexus 4 on Giffgaff's £12 tariff and the other 3 in my family will be doing the same when their contracts run out.

To be honest, I'm glad to be finally off the 24 month treadmill and look forward to upgrading when it suits me in future.

    yet another update.

have got the ball rolling with the firm i work for to change from O2. i've proven that they can get better deals elsewhere.

their concern was replacement handsets. but we dont really use state of the art phones anyway. so its cheaper to just buy them.

so that 29 extra lost customers!
£10k not going into O2's accounts per year!

    hehe!

you seem a bit determined to move to a different company who can do the exact same thing.... you know that right?

    Vodafone have done it before
    Three have done it before
EE (T-Mobile/Orange) have done it twice in the past 2 years

so i don't see what you're accomplishing here. Yeh if you get them to refund the price increase that's great. But what's the point in moving to a different company (esp business customers) when they can just do the same thing.

Yes, but as a new customer you get a better deal and more choice.

I'll be leaving O2 as soon as my contract is up too.

No you don't. If you're in the last month of your contract you can upgrade to any deal a new customer can get. That's the same with all networks. It's only when you're doing an early upgrade, or want to remain on your old tariff where O2 can and will screw you over.

Besides, if you're leaving due to o2 being expensive that's fine. But if you're leaving due to the RPI increase then you should know that other networks have done it before in the past and can do it again. The most recent example coming from the UK's largest network, EE.

Yes you can. Shop around, get the best deal regardless of operator. Upgrade deals aren't necessarily the best deal. I know O2's website sends you to a different part of their website to deal with your upgrade, give you a list of phone and tariff's and lets you pick one. What's tto say they are the best deals? Nothing.

If the OP wants to leave because of price rises, then fair enough, what does it matter to you? Just because operators have done it before and may do it again is irrelevant.

Maybe the OP thought O2 was utter cr*p before the price rises? I know I did. Can't wait to get away from them.

what i am acomplishing is getting a better deal where i get more value for money.
the big four have all done it. but there are others out there.

Tesco's have announced they will never increase prices mid term.
Giffgaff are rolling monthly prices so if they do hike them, you can get out asap.

yes giffgaff and tesco use the 02 network. so some money maybe going their way. but not as much as what they would have been doing.

the point is that i have given o2 enough chances to right their wrongs. if they had have met any of my resolution options i would have rstarted a new contract with them or upgraded at the end of my contract.

by totally disregarding all my options i'm leaving them altogether.

after 16 years loyalty they pull a stunt like this so im off!

Sorry, in that case it does make sense. It's just when you said business customers i didn't imagine you'd go with giff gaff or tesco as they don't do business lines as far as i'm aware.

The only reason i said that stuff before was because i'd thought you'd gone through another major company which could also hike your prices at any time.

    @gordon
I meant you get the same deals as new customers on O2 in the last month of your contract. Obviously if you shop around you can get better deals but i was just stating that you will get the same deal as new cutomers in the last month, where as if you upgrade before then it's likely you won't get such a good deal.

The only reason i was making a deal about the RPI increase was because everyone i talk to has no idea that other networks have done the same in the past. They think the only network to do it is their own.

Ah right. i see where the confusion was.
no i've proven that if employees all had phone deals like giffgaff which are based on a petty cash like arrangement within work, the savings are astronomical.
there would be a bit of administration involved but it would work well.

all because o2 wouldnt budge on the subject. having noticed some o2 forums on social media sites i think they'll be getting a little worried now.

hundreds of people are fed up with this situation and are leaving them once their contracts are up.

plus soon when ofcom publishes its report it will hopefully shut the door on mid contract price rises.

if it was so obvious in the t&c's. why did the majority of people not know they could do such hikes?

Because people don't read the contracts or small print, I am afraid.

You are doing the right thing in going for your best option, which may be giffgaff, Tesco, Ovivo or whatever.

But you can't single out O2 as being any worse than any of the big 4, only that it affected you as you were a, O2 customer.

Orange have just done the same to me and if my contract wasn't up in April, I would have gone for them on the badly written contract referring to the Office of National Statistics that was dissolved 15 years ago - see current thread.

I will switch my 2nd line from Orange to Ovivo which will be free for me, but I will keep my Vodafone sim-only contract with a major player asat less than £12 it's too little cost to bother me and reliability of service is a must.
