Just drive it on your full comp.

You won't be covered as once you buy the car the third party cover a policy may offer is no longer valid since you now own the car. The V5 will take time to come through but it doesn't matter as ownership is separate.

As above not covered 3rd party once you buy the car.

Its solely down to the driver to make sure they are insured.

Read all the posts where cars get impounded. And just imagine thats a tiny percentage of the number that do get caught.

Only if you want 6 points and the car impounded.

Except fully comp insurance doesnt automatically cover you on other cars, and a lot of insurance companies are removing cover on another vehicle from fully comp policies, so it could land someone in hot water.
I still have it on my NFU insurance policy, but i know my father's policy with Axa (I think) has it removed.

When i bought my Daughter a car last year i just bought a 1 day comp insurance for it to drive home on,as the car was 80 miles away and got a friend to take me to collect it while she was at work, cost about £15, she then arranged her own insurance to start the next day, could have driven it on my comprehensive cover but it only gives third party to drive other cars, and not worth the risk on a £6000 car

Exactly what I did as well. Make sure that you carry the certificate with you though as the car may not be on the MIB data base.

Just ask the seller to drive it back to your house for you and pay for it when you both get there; then give them a lift home in your existing insured car; simple. Most sellers will do this to get a sale.

Most policies say you cannot drive a car you own under the 'drive any vehicle' clause.

I just get a quote for insurance, find the one I want, ring up and get a reference number for the quote. I go to collect the car and all being well, ring the insurance co there and then and activate the insurance - making sure I note the policy number and the name of the person I'm speaking to. You don't need a cover note to drive.

If it's a Sunday I'd do it all online from my laptop when I got there.

Despite the plethora of counter points following ... I did exactly this. I bought a car from a copper, and drove it home on my DOC cover using his ongoing insurance. I didn't officially purchase it until I got home successfully ... it was merely an extended test drive up till that point.
