Tobacco ads are already banned. Do you agree with this? Should any others be banned from our screens or should the public take responsibility for their choices?

I have no idea what an ambulance chaser advert is? The adverts that I absolutely detest are the pay day loans, it's so wrong! No-one can repay that sort of money at that interest rate without getting into further debt. I think the companies that rip people off this way should be hung drawn and quartered. I don't like advertising full stop, I think it has a lot to answer for and I once saw an article about some research that had been done and the conclusion was that they may as well not advertise, they would still make the same profit.

Ambulance chasers = claims management companies.

I would ban pay day loans companies and have alcohol and fast food banned from prior to the watershed.

copy & paste from FB response:

When you look at the results, it doesn't seem to be collating those who haven't ticked either box against a type - meaning that they want no ban at all.

For example I didn't tick any box against Toys & Gadgets as I don't believe they should be banned at all.

The results tell me that 71 people think you should ban the ads completely; 272 think they should be banned from children's tv only; but I have no idea how many people agree with me that they shouldn't be banned at all.

I'd have expected that you could collate that from 'blank' on 'submit' scores?

Personally I'd ban ALL adverts directed at children, regardless of what they're advertising. When TV advertising was first introduced, it was passed by parliament on the condition that the ads themselves would not be directed at children. Then, a few years later, the rules were quietly changed following intense lobbying from the independent TV companies.

Allowing TV adverts directed at children is one of the most corrosive elements of modern TV broadcasting and I'd ban it in a heartbeat.

Advertising controversial products (drugs, gambling etc.) to adults, I don't really care about, except for the fact that a lot of kids watch adult TV too, so there's a risk they might normalise certain types of behaviour. I don't think it's a big issue for ads shown after the watershed though.

  • It may seem heartless but I would ban all the charity ads that show animals, children, people, etc etc in emotionally abusive ways. I really don't give a toss about all the other ads. I can tune them out, but the heartless charity adverts are so hurtful to watch. I realize they need to do it inorder to get money but surely there's a way to do it by positive reinforcement rather than negative. Some channels are worse than others. How can the charities afford to air them so often. Surely it's a waste of money in a way. I've not voted on the poll because the thing I want to vote off isn't listed. Surely I'm not the only one sick of all the emotional hijacking... and yes, I do donate to charity when I can but as I'm currently unemployed and job seeking its not something I can do easily or all the time.

Interesting poll. Wanted to vote for PPI reclaimers but haven't actually got any reason to ban them.
In the end I voted to uphold the tobacco ban and to ban junk food ads for children (aiming junk food ads at children has got to be wrong). The rest was just a case of not wanting to give children the impression that using such services was reasonable - so I voted to ban debt consolidation and payday loans from children's TV.

I totally agree with you on this one. I used to make a regular donation to NSPCC but when I realised how much it was costing them to advertise on TV and how much money they spend on marketing by post, I stopped donating. I want my money to be used to help the charity's service users, not to pay for expensive advertising.

  • I agree, charity adverts heavily upset me, they have done for years. They manage to raise the funds for advertising which I feel would be better spent actually helping.

I wish I were in a position to donate to a charity but it wouldn't be one that was busy advertising.

Though on the subject of upsetting adverts I have to say this is possibly the least shocking of them Marie Cure 2013 The Great Daffodil Appeal 2013 - Symmetry (can't post links sorry) though it still upsets me (think it's because it's more personal)

As for the poll baring the children's adverts I would ban them all, though I do believe we need modify the way in which children's adverts are created. It entices children to pester their parents for something they may not be able to afford.

Payday lenders should be banned full stop (having said that we have been forced to rely on them on numerous occasions though it's very easy to get into debt with them)

Ambulance chasers annoy the heck out of me, they detract from serious claims from health and safety breaches and promote stupidity. I recall seeing one where an alarm fitter was given the wrong ladder, yes they shouldn't have given you that ladder but why the heck did you climb that ladder if you knew it wasn't the right one.

PPI reclaim adverts, why pay someone to do it when it can be done for free.

Gambling well that may as well be put in the same bracket as payday loans, more than likely thats where you'd go if you'd lost all your money.
