How come it is considered funereal for a bride to wear black but you rarely see grooms wear anything else???

I can't think of a wedding with groom in black. Here there more often in a kilt.

I agree that a bride should wear what she wants but also respect the opinions of those who will be surprised at black.

How can you do both? :D

(If the bride's choice doesn't sit well with others I mean.)

She wears what she wants while accepting that she may get comments from some who disagree with her choice. Maybe by explaining to those who would find it unusual.

The dress is gorgeous! Wear what you want, just because white is traditional doesn't mean you HAVE to wear it.

I was tempted to wear a black dress myself, the only reason I decided against it was because I wear black every day and barely wear any other colour. I think my family/friends will be more shocked when I turn up in white!
  • That is absolutely gorgeous. You will certainly be a bride to be remembered. I wouldnt think of as completely black anyway, it has a lot of cream/ dusky pink? showing through. The bridesmaids (if youre having any) could be in the matching colour to the underskirt. Stunning.

As many have said, it's your day - go for it. That's my ususal answer to these types of questions.

However...My friend wants to wear a green dress. I'm trying to convince her to wear white because she will look beautiful in a white dress and can wear a green dress on her honeymoon or to a speacial anniversary dinner, or a fancy New Year's Eve ball...

Have you tried on any white dresses yet? Do and see how you feel. Also - when are you getting married? Black will look less imposing (? right word?) in winter, but perhaps out of place in the summer sun?

I'm getting married in winter so I don't think it would be too out of place. I haven't tried on any dresses yet, I guess I need to try all different styles and colours and see which I like best...

    It's a beautiful dress.

I wore a dark purple evening dress as I am not a "big white wedding" kind of girl. No one even questioned it, they all said how beautiful it was and how lovely I looked.

It is a day to do as you and your OH want IMO, not to worry what everyone else thinks!

Everyone knows my favourite colour is purple and I don't think they'd be totally surprised if I wore a purple dress, but I wouldn't want to be predictable...

It's a beautfiul dress, but you're obviously having doubts about it otherwise you wouldn't have posted the question. What worries you about it?

    Tradition?

Yes I think it is the tradition and also that as some people on here have said, black can symbolize mourning...
I'm going to try it on and see what I think, knowing my luck it will look awful on me!

I'm the same and I think i'd feel wrong if I wasn't in purple for such a 'special day', so I refuse to even entertain the idea of white! /stubborn moo :o
