Hi

I have an orange contract that is ending on 17th May but due to hating the HTC Wildfire I have I would like to be rid of it ASAP! Various problems that have tried to be fixed but giving up now.

I understand that I would have to pay until the end of my contract but is there a way to get my mobile number transfered to the new phone if I leave Orange before 17th May?

TIA

You need to give 30 days notice and request a PAC (port authority code) from Orange. As soon as you give the PAC to the new provider your contract with Orange will be cancelled and you'll have to pay the early termination charge. The PAC enables you to keep your number and expires 30 days after issue

Not necessarily, especially if the last month of the minimum term was paid upfront. Pretty often you are likely to get a refund instead.

Yes, it would depend on when the OP cancels. I was working on the assumption they wanted to cancel now

I was hoping to cancel ASAP! How would that look?

The number is associated with the sim card, not the phone. You can just buy a new phone and use it with the existing sim.
If you want to leave Orange and go to another provider you will have to pay upfront all you owe until May 17th (= Early Termination Fee).
Just get the PAC and give it to the new provider to port the number from Orange to the new sim card.

Would I have to wait 30 days or would the PAC be immediate?

No, it lasts for 30 days and can be used at any time. You'll have to pay until 17/5 regardless of when you leave.

Thanks... if I can ever get through to orange I think I'll cancel.

Already this week the phone has sent texts to the wrong person, ran out of charge from being fully charged only 2 hours beforehand and takes AGES to respond to anything....carrier pigeon would be quicker!

Getting a PAC is not cancelling. It's a option to cancel that expires in 30 days If you ring Orange to cancel, you will lose the number and still have to give 30 days notice and pay the ETC.
Just buy a £5 PAYG handset and use that until your minimum term expires.
PS: your contract doesn't end 17/5, only your minimum term does.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Right so let me get this straight. I phone Orange and ask for PAC code and also to cancel contract as of 17th May. I am then liable for the amount I would be paying for the contract had it ran up until 17th May. Is that right?

Sorry for all the questions... just want to have it clear when I get through!

    :)
