Anyone painted their kitchen tiles with tile paint?

Hi,

My kitchen needs updating. And like many, I don't have too much loot!

I am having the doors replaced, ie keeping the inside of the cupboards and the layout.

The tiles on the wall are in great condition, but are tired and a bit out of date.

So I just wondered if anyone had painted their tiles, and how did it go?

Seems like a no brainer to me, but what are the pitfalls, and what brand did you use if you found it a good option?

Thanks a million.

I did it years ago, not in this house. I never used proper tile paint just good quality gloss and undercoat, i can't remember the make now. It must have been done for 10yrs or more without any problems until i renewed the kitchen and re-tiled.

    DON'T DO IT !!!

i used it for my bathroom and it was just awful.

awful to apply & looked awful.

after trying to save money, i spent apx £50 on the paint, hours of my time applying the hideous stuff, then ended up having to re-rile the room anyway as it looked so bad.

application - think trying to apply treacle to wet glass

finished product - tippex on nails inc the brush strokes

after general use of bathroom - the "paint" starts to peel off like thick glue

YUK !! never ever again for as long as i live. i would rather keep with the original tiles, no matter how bad they are, until i could afford a proper job

I painted our kitchen tiles 16 years ago as a temporary fix while we saved up. They turned out so well that I've never replaced them. It was quite a small area behind the sink & on a windowsill and they've stood up really well to being cleaned on a daily basis.
I used International tile paint. It's slightly more expensive than some but you don't need a seperate primer. You clean the tiles and apply with a small gloss roller. It takes 24 hours for the paint to totally harden but the finish is flawless. I used white gloss.

    Good Luck, hope this helps

Painted tiles look naff and will always look naff. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to convince themselves that they look nice.
I wouldn't mind betting that anyone in those home improvement programmes who advocated painting tiles would not be seen dead with them in their own houses.
There is only one thing to be said in favour of painted tiles and that is, they were cheap to do. Unfortunately that is also what they will always look like. Cheap.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

We have it on our bathroom tiles. It was applied as a temporary spruce up ten or more years ago. It's only starting to look tatty now but will do until we refit the bathroom next year.

If I remember correctly, it was International tile paint we used.

  • Hi, I've just given my small bathroom a makeover using 'easy tile' Am amazed how easy it was and how 'real' the tiles look. I just did mine in white, but cut out 1 square every so often and replaced with a ceramic coloured tile bought cheaply. Am so pleased with the result.
