And my couple of hours has turned into more:( just had the boss on crying again, someone has phone in sick, so I have agreed to stay here for two extra hours to allow her time I get shift cover, I have however informed her I will not be doing much as I am shattered, I will manage the essentials ( meds admin etc) but that's my whack
  • What a nightmare El, hope you get a good rest when you go home.

It is a nightmare to be honest Tilly ... I do understand that these things happen, I get that ... But they seem to be happening ALL the time just now, it's harder to say no when a gun is held to your head as well, I have the choice of offering to stay till 10am or basically being here till someone comes to relieve me...

The other annoying thing is I have my three clients to do today, the plan was go home, sleep for 4.5 hours then get up and go to work( I'm trying to keep my clients used to getting me on a Monday ... It helps organise their week better) now this wouldn't have been a problem as on my last night shift I try and sleep only 4 hours or so so that I can sleep at night, today however that just won't happen, I will be lucky to get 2 hours sleep ( probably wont bother tbh) so it's gonna be a day of sugar and caffeine again :(

And I don't want to miss working with my clients as that's £52 I would potentially loose I will only make £6.80 working the two hours, eventually I want to get to the stage where If I stay in this job ( which I don't want to but I may not get another one soon) I will not need to do overtime at all because I will have enough clients to make it so that I don't need to do any, however I also don't want to start taking more clients on until I have got the three I currently have settled into a routine .... If that makes sense ?

If you stay in that job are you ever going to have the option of no overtime? You seem to get guilt tripped into it even when you don't want to :(

Hope you make it through today ok.

This is very very true Skinty .... But honestly I have been applying but there is nothing out there that I am willing to accept ... Now that may sound like ohhh I'm being picky ... But the truth is the industry tht I am in is pathetic for wages, workers rights etc ... The company I currently work for is one of the best in the industry. ( I know very hard to believe isn't it)

I want to work either for the NHS or the local council I don't want to go to another organisation like the one I am in ... Our nearest competitor pays over £2 an hour less ... And those workers really have a hard time of it ( like all industries people talk and share stories... Whenever I tell them who I work for I am told I am lucky)

    It's a nightmare situation tbh

When I was at uni I didn't do much overtime at all. ( if any ) it's more that just now we are trying to clear this debt and have savings so I want to do some ( no where near as much as I am though) but when word gets around that you are looking ... Well what can I say but it becomes exactly like what it currently is :(

If I managed to get these clients up and running then I could say no no no no ( except for days like today where I didn't really have a choice ) ... But I want to build that slowly so that it won't be a flash in the pan and so that I don't take too much out of myself ( yes even I know how stupid that sounded )

Sounds like you're really up against it, elantan. It's not fair that they put upon you all the time. It's a common story that you put yourself out to help out, but then it becomes expected that you'll do it every time. You almost make a rod for your own back!

Have you got a timeframe in mind as to when you'll be up and running with your clients? Perhaps if you know there's light at the end of the tunnel, and you can see the end of the line, it might help you to see your overtime as a means to an end, and not such a millstone round your neck that you can't seem to shift.

Hope you get some sleep too, or certainly a quiet rest.
Can you get extra energy from a different source than sugar and caffeine?
Perhaps some complex carbs like bananas?
It's really not good for you to rely on the others.

    Thinking of you!

  • Bah to work again putting you on the spot! ...

I do find it a little strange... not to mention darn right disconcerting ..... for a boss to be on the phone crying  It would make me wonder if they were actually fit for the role tbh

Hope you manage to get a catnap :)

this is deff a problem in our unit, we have made a rod for our own backs quite often, we have had more jobs added to our description and more is expected of us, the thing is i think more than anything it is the type of industry where this happens, i do not know anyone that works ( either in my current company or any of the other companies in the sector) that does not have this exact same issue, it isnt just me that is having to do all these hours ... honestly..

i am hoping to start doing another day of therapies after i have deff got the monday lot up and running, so i am hoping in another 5-6 weeks tbh, then i will take another 3 people on, that is about all that i want to take on though and it would need to be a friday due to my shift pattern.

i know, it really isnt good for me, but sadly i have been using caffeine and sugar for so long now that bananas just dont cut it, i wish they did as i love bananas, i will just have to ensure that the rest of the week i will be caffeine and sugar free

i know angel, the thing is she is on the phone crying alot, and not just to me either, it's quite interesting that you mention this as i was talking to the girl that took over from me about it and she said the same thing happened to her last week, i suggested that we will need to approach someone about it, the thing is she is past retirement age and works ridiculous hours, it is not unknown for her to be in the unit at 4.30am to talk to staff. including me, then go to the office for 7am then working till 10pm, she works crazy hours and doesnt really need to, she is exhausted and ready for a nervous breakdown, we have warned her several times to take it easy but she is in a worse position than we are as she has more than one unit to sort out, today two people phoned in sick, she was due to be working on recruitment to try and deal with the situation as we have all warned her we cant take much more and neither can she, now i think that has had to be cancelled as she has to cover the other unit.

I do feel sorry for her on the one hand but on the other like thistle points she has made a rod for her own back, i have never known a manager to work as many hours as she does, i dont know how she manages tbh. it is just a crazy situation just now but the sad thing is ... this isnt anything new, this happens far too often in our work, we have highlighted it so many times and yet it is still the same :(
