Br non !!! Tax code

It might not be called an emergency code anymore, but it used to be. It means tax payer is on basic rate, no allowances, therefore, not correct (if the circumtances you have told us are correct). More tax has been taken off that needed. And what I said still stands, if its incorrect you can get a rebate and need to get it changed.0

It never was called an emergency tax code when I worked for them. And I am talking about the days when we actually has to work it all out on paper and it all had to get Arith checked by someone and then the line manager had to authorise it and then the inspector had to authorise any repayments or underpayments and so on. Those were the days.
The em code was always expressed with an X on the end of the H or L code usually something like 236LX - the H was the married mans code. Abolished long ago for most people. Now it can be expressed as 810L M1 or W1 for month or weekly pay.0 -
Hi to all and thank you very much for your help so far. I have today spoken to HMRC and they confirmed I am indeed on the wrong tax code, it should be 810L going to 940L in April. They said they would contact my employer, and it is up to the employer to provide a refund which I thought was strange that it wouldnt come from HMRC. They are going to send the correct tax code to my employer. As I have just worked with my current employer (NHSP) since July 2012 when I asked about previous years employment with nurse bank on the BR !!! code, they said my current employer would sort it out which I find strange! Anyway I have no idea how much I am due as a refund, my employers will probably send me a tax refund and tax me on it anyway! Any further help would be greatly appreciated.0

Your current employer will only adjust your tax back to the start of this tax year, for previous tax years you will need to contact the tax office (there are time limits for this so do not delay). I assume that you have P60s for these years you may have to send them to the tax office,
Your current employer will do any tax refund for this year, that is normal practise. You will not be taxed on any tax refund. Your employer will recalculate the tax due on your earnings and deduct this from tax actually deducted the differance will be rebated to you.
As we are nearing the tax year end it is possible that the new tax details may not arrive in time, if this happens then you will need to claim from the tax office.0
