I think party bags are an abomination.

I work somewhere that hosts children's parties and most of the stuff from the party bags ends up being abandoned on the floor or left behind on the party table. Easter eggs sound like a much better idea :p

I'd go with it. If a particular child has a problem (e.g. an allergy or their parent has decided that they're giving it up for lent) then tough cheese - I'm sure they can find a suitable home for the egg and would hopefully still appreciate it as a nice thought.

Most party bags are full of useless tat that lasts about 5 minutes and gets thrown away.

I'm sure you'll find out if any of the children coming has an allergy. Surely that's going to apply to all party food not just what you give them to go home. It would be irresponsible of any parent not to let you know.

I think the party bag thing has gone OTT so wouldn't be at all concerned about any pretentious yummy mummies who might be critical. I'd go for the egg and a piece of cake, brilliant compromise!

My son is having a party just after easter, and the kids are all getting easter eggs instead of a party bag. Believe me, the parent of any child with allergies will let you know before the party, and will be on hand to swap the easter egg for something more suitable - my son has multiple allergies, and I would rather be handed an easter egg for him (that I can swap for a bag of haribos) than a bag full of cake and chocolate!

Ooh thanks you've given me an idea, my son is having his party that weekend too. One child has a dairy allergy what would be best to get for him instead do you think?

If you're prepared to pay extra for one child, the big supermarkets have dairy free easter eggs in their free from sections.

If the kid is like me and accustomed to not getting invited at all/getting a party bag with no edible things after not being able to eat anything at the party, it'll make his day that somebody pushed the boat out for him :p

I've done an Easter egg as a party gift before (instead of party bags) and they went down well.

It was an idea I pinched from someone else since I thought it was so good.
