The Great 'Ways to keep cool' Hunt

Just take it easy Elona....making beds up is exhausting, see if you can get someone to help you. I just use a fitted and flat sheet just now, so no struggle with duvets for a while now.
Primrose, so agree with your sentiments. There comes a time when comfort is the only thing. I see some amazing shoes in the shops and love them.....if I were 30 or so years younger. A 2" heel is as high as I go these days, and that's only for the odd night out, otherwise relatively flat.0 -
My on-off house guest returned yesterday evening.....and within 5 minutes asked why I was so bugged (his expression). It was purely the heat, but I felt a lot better after a large iced coffee. Well enough to clear the guest room of 200 or so books

It's much cooler today, far more pleasant. I'm looking forward to actually sleeping this evening.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Hello! In my flat I have floor to ceiling windows which face west and this causes a big issue with heating up my flat in summer where I get sunlight from about 1pm till 8pm. My living room becomes incredibly hot and the building developers have said not to put up black out curtains as some of the flats had their window glass crack because of temperature differences.
I was wondering if there is a company/solution (I’m in London) which can put tinted sheet on the windows from the outside (balcony access) or what the best way forward would be. Currently have a portable AC with a vent that’s goes out into the balcony but at best it keeps the flat around 27 degrees which is still too hot for my dog. Ideally I would like to hear about suggestion s to make my flat cool. Thanks.0 -
Be a bit wary with tinting windows, especially if they are sealed units.
Units that are manufactured as tinted should be OK but adding tinting can crack the windows or blow the seals as the temperature inside the void can get very warm.
A posh house where we used to live had large windows facing across the river but it was too hot, so the owner did what you are suggesting and all the south facing windows cracked.
He had to get all the units replaced with purpose made tinted units -dunno how much it cost though
I suggest you take advice and get some sort of warranty from the installer that the windows are OK for tinting as it could cost you a lot of money if it all goes wrong.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
I have floor to ceiling south facing windows, and couldn't get the house below 30C last summer, despite getting up at 4am and opening all the downstairs windows.
I keep the curtains closed in the day if it is extremely hot. it certainly helps to keep the place cooler. The curtains are not black out, but they have thermal linings. I wouldn't expect this to cause the glass to crack?
It doesn't matter how you cool the inside of your house; whether you use aircon or close the curtains, you will still have a temperature difference between the inside and the outside and DG should surely cope with this?
On the positive side, the solar gain on sunny winter days means my heating bills are low.0 -
Not a cheap solution but having an aircon unit installed in the affected room may help. We had one installed in a bedroom and it is easy to keep the temperature at 18 degrees ( or other choice). I've had a portable unit in the past and found it useless.0

Air con all the way.0

Sun canopy on outside? Depends on your situation regarding wind, safety etc, but just a thoughtNumerus non sum0

Install ceiling fans, and a decent inverter AC unit, leave windows open during the day , AC on for an hour to cool the room down , then switch on the fans to circulate the now cool air, works for me with summer temps here (Cyprus) of 40-50c.0

I had A/C fitted in bedrooms, living room & conservatory as on a hot calm summers day it's impossible to get a breeze through a bunglaow and night temperatures would often stay in the high 20s & 30s. A thing of the past now and I've never looked back. I'm also fortunate enough to have solar panels, so the a/c costs next to nothing to run.0
