    Certainly cheaper to drive.

When did it get so expensive?

You can do Newcastle - Newton Abbot for around £30 one way. E.g.,

    7th May Newcastle - London Kings Cross 13:59, £15 single arr. 16:51
London Paddington - Newton Abbot 17:33 £17.50 single, arr 20:57

The challenge is to find cheap fares that connect at convenient times. In this case 7th May, Tuesday, is obviously much cheaper than the 6th May, which is a bank holiday.

This may sound daft, but you could experiment with fly and train together

Flybe Newcastle to Southampton from £42, return leg from £39 per person

Southampton Airport Parkway to Newton Abbot from £7.50 pp each way advance single

It's a short walk from airport terminal to station, then changes at Salisbury and Exeter for the cheap route, maybe Romsey as well on some

Edit: actually I might can that idea, as flying to Exeter isn't as much as I thought a couple of posts above seemed to be saying - from about £43 for one leg, though there is more choice of flights Newcastle Southampton

Try splitting at Sheffield , Birmingham & Cheltenham.

Bit of a faff but I've had fares 50% of the price by doing that.

If you can be bothered try other splits too.

Think you might have misread his/her post. There's no issue in finding cheap fares - they just are available on the days you want to travel.

The friday journey is particularly expensive.

Try Megatrain from London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids, then a single to Newton Abbot at £5.10 or £7.40 each way.
