Yes tried everything suggested. No good. As advised I have tried to find the Local area connection, only found the talktalk broadband connection. Which is showing as the default connection. Is this right/normal.

Have you got the wireless router connected to the PC's Ethernet port?

So you do a renew and release when it is connected, and nothing happens, nothing with a subsequent ipconfig? If that is the case, try the reset button on the back of the router, or read the manual/run the software that came with it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    UPDATE!!

i have just managed to install the Zoom router/modem on my other pc (had to drag in from the other room). I wanted to make sure I didn't have a duff router. It installed OK, therefore nothing wrong with the router. however still won't install on this pc. I want to intall it on this pc because it is not to be used by the kids. Also when I go to look for Local Area connection, it only displays the BB connection logo. Is this right, as on the other pc it had 3 different connection options/logos??

Maybe if you delete all the network connections and restart the pc with the LAN wire connected to the router it might sort itself out.

Is the Ethernet port configured correctly? TCP/IP properties etc. of your LAN card.

The basic problem seems to be that you do not have a working ethernet connection. Either it is not installed and configured in the PC properly, or you have not connected the ethernet cable correctly, or it is somehow being disabled by some software on your system.

We can check these options (and more) in a minute, but just to pick you up/clarify on one small point first.... you said in post #27 "I want to install it on this pc because it is not to be used by the kids". Be aware that any PC that is connected to the router, wired or wirelessly, can access the setup screen for the router by typing the IP address of 10.0.0.2 into a web browser.

As you will see when you succeed, that will take you to the login screen for the router, where you will need to enter a username and password. The only way to stop your kids (and potentially an external hacker) from changing the router setup is to change the default username and password. So, don't be afraid to connect and configure the router using the kid's PC, or any other PC in the house for now.

Anyway, back to the problem of connecting what we will call your main PC to the router, which we will have to do at some point if you are ever going to access the web from your main PC.

If you right-click on My Computer, choose Properties > Hardware > Device Manager, and then scroll down to the section marked Network Adaptors, what is listed there? (You may have to click the '+' sign to expand the list.)

If nothing is listed there, you do not have an ethernet network card installed. If a device is present, but with a yellow exclamation mark beside it, double click the device and tell us what is listed on the Properties page that pops up. The yellow exclamation mark indicates a problem with the device, and the Properties page gives a clue as to what is wrong.

If what seems to be a network card is listed and working in device Manager, click on Start > Run, then type 'cmd' (without the quotes) and press enter, you will see a new window with a black background appear.

At the flashing cursor at the end of the line, type 'ping 127.0.0.1' (without the quotes), press Enter, and tell us what response is listed. This routine forces the network adaptor on your main PC to perform a kind of self-test routine.
