If an individual requests a credit report, would that show fraud markers (CIFAS)? Might be worth the OP considering. Although if its very recent it probably won't show on there yet.
  • Hi guys,

Quick update....I have spoken to the Branch Manager again today and he has informed me that there are no updates whatsoever on the account and that he still knows nothing. I re-iterated the fact that I have no money available to me etc. etc. so he said he will speak to his manager "locally" (not sure who this would be) to see if he can authrorise a withdrawal of £200 (similar to what I could withdraw using my debit card) and come back to me.........

He has just called me back and said that I can go to the branch and have £200 of my money. My thoughts, which I shared with the manager, are that if there was a huge issue, I wouldn't be able to have ANY money, he said "Well it has been authorised locally by my manager and whilst I can't see your accounts on my system, I can see that you had £764 go into it on Monday 25th so on that basis we can give you £200".

Now, would they give me money if there was a huge problem or am I just reading into it that it's ok when they might be giving me the money to passify me when really there is a big issue.

    Thoughts please guys.......

And thanks again, your help/advice/thoughts are much appreciated.

Could be either, only the bank know the answer. Unfortunately you will just have to wait it out and get ready to make a complaint if it turns out it was all unfounded.

I'd prefer to borrow the money from friends/relatives and then get a compensation for all troubles. You seem to have wasted your chance.

The bank will be able to see where the recent credit has come from. If they are happy with the source of this credit, they will allow you to draw against it. If they couldn't verify where it was from, they wouldn't have allowed any withdrawal.

Definately sounds like AML procedures to me. It's just a case of waiting now. At least it sounds as though they will allow you access to more money if you need it. If i were you OP, i'd check whether any direct debits or standing orders are due to be paid.

Grumbler, you really live up to your name don't you ?
  • Would they allow me to draw out ,my money if they are looking into anti money laundering then?

The manager said that he got the withdrawal authorised "at local level" but surely if there was an issue with the account, as in a major issue they wouldn't allow any money to be withdrawn.

To be honest I'm not bothered about compensation, I just want my account back!!

Any idea how long AML checks take to be carried out? It's so frustrating waiting to hear something.

Would they allow a withdrawal if my account was frozen by the police for instance?
I've done absolutely nothing wrong at all but they're making me think all sorts now and it's getting me really down!

One thing is for sure, once this is resolved I will be closing my accounts with Natwest.

You can't demand compensation for deliberately making life difficult for yourself, get a grip!

The account won't have been frozen by the Police. Natwest have frozen it because they feel they have a reason to do this. One of those reasons could be anti money laundering checks. Only Natwest know the reason, whatever it is, all you can do is wait for them to contact you.

Try not to think too much about it, you can't do anything about it at the moment, if you've not done anything wrong, it will all be sorted out. All banks carry out anti money laundering checks, if you've not had any problems with Natwest before, it would be a bit hasty to close your accounts. It can happen to anyone, with any bank.

They're not allowed to let you know why this has happened, they could face prosecution if they do, they're not doing it to wind you up.

Surely though if the account was "frozen" they wouldn't allow a withdrawal?

I wish I could just put to the back of my mind but I'm so worried by it; it's all the cloak and dagger that makes me worry, it's like JUST TELL ME :)

Hopefully it'll be resolved soon so I can rest easy!!
